The holiday season is starting off less than merrily for Hollywood.
Following the movie industry's lowest-grossing weekend of the year last week
, this weekend's new wide-release franchise films failed to match their
previous installments, continuing a domestic box-office slump.
"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," from Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros.
Pictures, and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," from News Corp.'s
Twentieth Century Fox, respectively grossed $40 million and $23.5 million.
Previous installments in each series took in $62.3 million and $48.9 million
their opening weekends, both in 2009.
News Corp. also owns The Wall Street Journal.
