第3届夏季奥林匹克运动会

第三届奥林匹克运动会于1904年7月1日至11月23日在美国圣路易
城举行。
在第一、二届奥运会上美国运动员成绩突出，奥委会便做出决定
：第三届奥运会在美国的某个城市举行，这也符合使奥林匹克运动国
际化的理想。首先提出申请的是国北部工业重镇芝加哥，但时隔不久
，美国的另一座城市圣路易也开始竞争第三届奥运会的主办权，而且
“泛美博览会”的体育委员、美国业余体协主席苏里曼也支持在圣路
易城举行。两个城市争执不下，最后由美国总统、美国奥委会名誉主
席西奥多·罗斯福裁决，在圣路易城举办。1902年，国际奥委会讨论
这一议题时，听从了罗斯福的意见，这样，圣路易成为第三届奥林匹
克运动会的举办城市。
圣路易是美国第八大城市，位于密西西比河右岸，交通方便，工
业发达。18世纪时，该市尚属法国管辖，曾是皮毛交易市场， 1803
年圣路易归还美国。圣路易在人口、经济实力上都远远逊色于芝加哥
。但因其在1904年为庆祝该市成立一百周年召开世界博览会，符合原
主办者使博览会、运动会同时举行的想法，圣路易在申办过程中取
