came in today. Now I have to reconsider.I'll never assume anything until the
cycle is done. It'd be great to have some input from this board to help
with my decision. So SCU is strong at IP, which is my preferrd field to
study, it's closer to my family so I don't have to move and SCU gave me some
money. Davis is higer ranked but my main concern is that I will have more
debt upon graduation and I wanna work in SF bay area. |

coz you wanna practice IP and stay in Bay Area
Or you may ask UC Davis to see if they'd like to give you more money than Sa
nta Clara before you turn down the admission

p*******l 发帖数: 23 | 3 Congratulations on your UC Davis admission! Are you sure IP is the only
thing you are interested? My impression is that you don't have to worry
about Davis's reputation in SF bay area when compared with Santa Clara,
be it IP or other fields; it's basically nothing different from
Hastings's. I heard Santa Clara's good name in IP was related to a
great patent professor who is now retired, so it's hard to say what will
happen in three years since now every law school seems to invest a lot
in IP.

p*******l 发帖数: 23 | 4 Also, if you can, try find out how many SCU students are focusing on IP.
If most them are there for IP, that might not be too good as it's harder
for you to stand out ... of course, if you have connections in silicon
valley, things are totally different.

better shot at big firms.
big firms care about school ranking. |
e*******3 发帖数: 34 | 6 I heard the same thing aboubt the great patent professor, who is pioneer of
the IP law. Maybe that's a downside. But SCU offer way more IP related
classes than any other school.
I know ranking matters. If it's T14, that'd be obvious choice. but UCD ranks
below 30. Does the difference in ranking still worth more debt? If I am not
shooting for big law, does it justify my decision to pick SCU? |

of

not

p*******l 发帖数: 23 | 9 Hard to say before we earn any money as a lawyer, but is 40k-50k really
considered some form of debt in SF bay area? Just kidding :-P
Guess if IP is absolutely your only thing, there's no right or wrong
choice here. Otherwise, I personally favor UC Davis -- it's got a UC name
tag after all. But all is conditioned on your personal/family status.

W*********l 发帖数: 624 | 10 UCD for sure.
Ranking always matters, biglaw or small firms.
How many courses do you need in order to practice Patent law? Not many,
only 1-2 courses or maybe 3 max. The others are not really necessary and don
't make a real difference anyway.
I think the most important thing FOR YOU to practice Patent law is that you
already have a tech background.
That's your biggest strength. Therefore you dont' need so many IP courses,
really. Extra course don't add to your strength. |
a**********m 发帖数: 2098 | 11 honestly, i agree that IP classes do not count much in law school.
but opportunities and human resources, like the alumini, cannot be dwarfed.
remember, those rankings do not merely measure faculty or class settings.
moreover, Santa Clara has a better location for internship or even paid jobs
when u r in there.
it's a headache to move to another place and work for only 2-3 months, unles
s accommodation is already settled.
you can even work parttime after 1st or 2nd year.
the only con in choosing

almost two different tiers. |
