Harbaugh to Michigan a Done Deal
by admin on December 1, 2010
Jim Harbaugh will be Michigan’s next football coach. While there remains
only speculation in the media and among Michigan alumni, the decision has
already been made privately. Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has
stated repeatedly that he is going to “wait to evaluate” the state of the
football program until after the bowl game. This, of course, is nonsense.
The powers that be at Michigan have already put in motion the plan to hire
Jim Harbaugh.
While publicly Michigan has created an appearance of patience and restraint
regarding its coaching situation, behind the scenes Jim Harbaugh is about to
become Michigan’s next coach. Michigan’s desire to hire Harbaugh is
matched equally by Harbaugh’s desire to return to Michigan. This is not a
Les Miles 2007 situation for the Wolverines. The stars are aligning for a
Jim Harbaugh led Michigan football program. Let’s discuss the top five
reasons why Harbaugh to Michigan is a done deal.
1. Jim Harbaugh in High Demand
Harbaugh has done a tremendous job with Stanford in his four years in Palo
Alto. Currently 11-1, the Stanford Cardinal are destined for a BCS berth
and a legitimate opportunity to finish in the top 5 this season. Since
taking over the program, Harbaugh has changed Stanford from a perennial
loser in the Pac 10 into a powerhouse. He has changed the culture,
recruited top athletes and game planned successfully. Simply put, he has
been a winner. Harbaugh’s success has not gone unnoticed. Harbaugh will
have the luxury of several top flight coaching offers in the upcoming months
, including an offer from the San Francisco 49ers.
2. Harbaugh is Leaving Stanford
Jim Harbaugh is a rising star and will be leaving Stanford this season,
regardless of whether he goes to Michigan. Stanford stadium has a 50,000
person capacity. Last week against Oregon State, they had 38,775 people
fill their stands. Stanford attendance as a percentage of capacity (80%)
ranks dead last among current top 25 teams. Harbaugh has enjoyed his time
at Stanford, but he is ready to move on to a top tier coaching position.
3. Harbaugh is a Michigan Man
Harbaugh credits former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler with helping to
formulate his own approach and philosophy as a football coach. Michigan has
been well known over the past five decades to prefer giving the coaching
position to a “Michigan Man” instead of hiring an outsider to the program.
While the fan base remains split about current coach Rich Rodriguez, the
fact remains that Rich Rod is an outsider to the Michigan football tradition.
One of the greatest concerns from Michigan and its alumni is Rich Rodriguez
’s approach to rivalries. At crucial times, Coach Rodriguez doesn’t seem
to understand how important these games are to Michigan. Rodriguez is a
combined 0-6 against Ohio State and Michigan State. Ohio State’s Jim
Tressel and Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio have made beating Michigan a
main focus. After Michigan’s loss to Michigan State he commented: “ We
lost to Michigan State, what, you wanna take me and hang me off the building
now?” Michigan fans have felt incredible frustration with this “who
cares” attitude.
4. Dave Brandon Wants Harbaugh, Not Rodriguez
Michigan AD Dave Brandon took over the athletic department last year,
returning to Michigan after having been CEO of Domino’s Pizza. Brandon has
remained skeptical of Rich Rodriguez since becoming athletic director.
Privately, Brandon was no fan of Rodriguez when he became head of the
athletic department. The football program’s struggles, combined with NCAA
sanctions, have been a source of increasing frustration. Rich Rodriguez has
done himself no favors in 2010 by registering another losing season (3-5)
in the Big Ten.
The ties to Michigan help to connect both sides. Michigan and AD Dave
Brandon very much want Harbaugh to be Michigan’s football coach. Jim
Harbaugh’s dream job is to return to his alma mater. It doesn’t take an
economist to figure out this supply-demand curve.
5. Michigan’s Boosters Pick Harbaugh
Harbaugh remains a favorite son of Michigan football. Jim Harbaugh to
Michigan has become a rallying cry for Wolverine fans everywhere. The
University is desperate to get the football program back on track after
three years of embarrassing mediocrity. Michigan fans are an entitled fan
base with extremely high expectations. Needless to say, they haven’t been
pleased with the results of the last three years.
Big time donors and boosters are grumbling. With a whole host of new luxury
boxes to fill in a difficult Michigan economy, winning is the only option
for this football program. Harbaugh has proven that he is a winner at every
single coaching position that he has taken. Could there be a more natural
fit than to bring back Jim Harbaugh to Ann Arbor? Michigan fans can only
cross their fingers as they hope for Jim Harbaugh to become Michigan’s next
football coach. | h*****s 发帖数: 3289 | | p**m 发帖数: 11571 | 3 re
