Q1: What makes some students, like Jamal and others, hide their intelligence
and knowledge from peers and even teachers?
Blending into the Crowd
By James
In most schools, there are very strong undertones that push students to
try and fit into the norm of what’s considered the popular “in-crowd”.
Usually, people who are smart are just considered “nerds” and thus are
thrown out of the popular circle. Because of this, some students gain a
mentality that makes them try to hide the fact that they are intelligent
because of the possible shunning if they’re discovered to be so.
Also, if the people whom the students meet with on a daily basis (such as
friends, family, etc.) are not as intelligent as the students are, then the
students may think it would be wrong to show how smart they can be, thus,
attempt to try to hide their knowledge or intelligence.
Other times, students may believe that if they exhibit what they know, then
their parents or teachers (usually) will push them to show even greater potential,
and the students won’t want all that pressure on their shoulders. After all,
such a heavy load, to them, is just too much trouble to bear.
These examples are probably only scratching the surface of the reasons why
some people hide how intelligent they are, as every person has some
idiosyncratic reasons (if only because of small details), and so it would be
highly unlikely anyone could ever list all the possible reasons. A layout
of the basic principles on why smart students could hide their knowledge may
be possible, but it wouldn’t be completely accurate. As such, the above
are just some of the most obvious examples of why a person would go as far
as to attempt not to show how knowledgeable he or she really can be, a
horrifying thought indeed.

I change my mind. James should consider academia. This essay has almost
everything of an academic paper, except literature review. hehe. Awesome!

The education options for gifted kids, fall into two categories, homogeneous
grouping and heterogeneous grouping. Each has its own advantages and
disadvantages. The problem here is one of the disadvantages of
heterogeneous grouping. It happens more often on girls than boys. Finding
one's "true peers" in a heterogeneous environment would help alleviate this
problem.
