找工作半年多了，很不顺利，
有一些想法，想和大家分享。
版上大多数兄弟姐妹的专业是CS及相关，
所以类似的经历对我这样的工程专业就不太适用了。
先介绍一下我的背景，
我的专业是Chemical Engineering，
方向是Biochemical/Bioprocess Engineering, Fermentation,
Protein Expression & Recovery,
学历是刚毕业的博士。
在找工的过程中，
我发现，这个博士学位对工程行业来说，
基本上是一个负资产。
因为，工程行业，尤其是负责过程开发这一块的，
强调的是工作经验，而非学历高低。
相关的Openings绝对不能算少，
但是，大多数要求的是本科学历，
少数面向博士学历的又往往要求若干年的工作经验。
即使我冒着Overqualify的风险去低就那些初级职位，
公司却又往往不愿意为这样的职位Sponsor工作签证。 |

出国和找工作期间从bbs上看了这么多有用的信息，觉得也该把自己的经历贴出来给大
家参考一下。
Background：国内著名大学的冷门专业：生物；在美国一所很一般的大学混了四年
biochem Ph.D.开始找制药厂工作，paper一个都没有（draft两年前就给了老板，被压
着没改），倒是有一个patent。英语口语那叫一个烂，四年里面就没怎么讲过英文，不
提也罢。
开始根本摸不清头脑，胡乱写了份简历，让一个刚找到工作的statistic master帮忙改
。他的idea是要突出你的能力而不是突出你的成就，所以把研究经历删掉了不少。后来
跟很多师兄师姐讨论觉得Ph.D.找工作很大的竞争来自有多年经验的under和master，当
然在实验室里不可能做的跟制药厂里的一样，但是要是有相关的经历就好很多。于是针
对于相关的 position加入很多研究经历，基本是job description要求什么就有什么（
当然顺便吹了一吹）。于是开始由很多的电话。一开始浪费了实验室一个former

公司：Top10 Pharma，base salary 85-90k, bonus 6-8% of salary, 若干benefits。
本人：中部学校，排名top20，可惜系一般。专业biochem, 第六年，马上毕业，若干
JBC level paper。方向是protein purification 和 protein characterization。
过程：这是我做intern的组，两个月前给的面试，今天offer才下来。期间曲曲折折只
有经历的人才知道。现在只觉一块石头落了地，并没有十分开心。
感想：fresh PhD找工作真的不容易，尤其还有身份问题在里面。我也投了其他
position，但只有6或12－month contract才有消息。Full time一个没有。

2.我肯定是move on,重新开始找工了。但是赔偿一定要争取。我觉得公司HR在withdraw
letter里面只字未提收回的原因就是在逃避责任，以为国际学生好欺负。我并不是想

08年来美，用一年半的时间读了个蒙人的mba.其实当时大学毕业，就是想出国看看，尽
快拿个学位回国找个工作。从小就是那种成绩平平的人，根本跟牛人，牛校不沾边的主
儿。所以根本就没想来美国，知道来美国的都是牛人，考G,T，自己打拼出来的。可是
，大学毕业前后，认识了现在的老公。老公是一心要来美国的，而且是以后要在美国发
展的。但是也不知道是哪来的那股劲，放弃了去澳洲的年头，改了美国。老公07年先来
的美国，当时老公想先结婚，然后我办f2来，再申请老公的学校，在选专业。可是我当
时怕f2过来，万一申请不顺利，就只能在家里蹲着了。所以坚决要自己出来。最后挣扎
了一年，终于靠自己f1出来了，可是申请的不是老公的学校。距离老公那里，飞机3个
小时。

发帖数: 1692 | 30 已经三年了，在坚持一年多就可以拿phd了，不要有点可惜，拿了phd又怕以后不好改学别
的专业。现在的专业算是surface chem 交叉点 biochem 和 EE 的东西，毕业了至少还得
坐两年postdoc才有可能找到工作。实在不想再做postdoc,所以想换个比较容易找工作的
专业读个master,不想一辈子在lab里做research.
但真的不知道要改什么，学了这么多年chem, 不想完全丢掉，想找个专业prefer chem
background 的。考虑了很久，还是不知道可以改学什么, after all, I don't have
solid background in maths or IT, or even biology.
听说过IP law，but seems chem background don't have any advantages, 其他的又不
知道。一直在学校里呆着，也没有工作经验,似乎也没法去business school.有没有过来
人能给点好的建议。

mm今年本科毕业，申请美国PhD，现在已经拿到PennState 生化系的offer，她还在等康
奈尔大学遗传发育系的消息，估计拿到的可能性很大。mm只有遗传发育的研究背景，目
标是博士毕业后找相关专业的工作（包括研究性工作，不包括做教授）。她现在对于将
来学生化还是遗传很拿不准主意。如果学生化的话（感兴趣的方向是酶学或者生物信息
学），意味着她要努力去补一些背景知识（化学不好，生物信息没接触过），好处是可
以来PennState和我团聚，而且似乎酶学或生物信息的话不管在国内还是在国外都比较
好找工作，而学遗传发育她有基础，但是她觉得不好找工作，况且会和我分开。mm比较
喜欢享受生活，害怕在牛校会比较累。
所以小弟有两个问题想请教相关达人：
请问她应该选择康奈尔呢还是选择PennState?牛校对未来找生物相关的工作有帮助吗？
帮助能有多大呢？
请问Biochem和genetics哪个比较好找工作（除faculty以外）？

What you did is too academical, not the taste for industry.
