p***r 发帖数: 920 | 1 i'm always interested in interior design and believe i have some talent in
that.
i guess now i've finally reached the point where i'm considering getting a
design degree and switching career. can anybody in the design business provide
some insights on some of my concerns?
1) i'm finishing up my ph.d. (totally unrelated to design) in the us and i
haven't taken any credited design/arts classes before. what level of full time
program do you think will fit me? any suggestions on part-time courses? h | e**n 发帖数: 5876 | 2

requirements as well as test ur talent.
one other thing, more than 90% of interior design students r girls, at least
in my school. does it tell anything to u?

how
great advice and thanks! unfortunately the art school in my univ. does not
have a design program. there're a couple design schools in chicago. do you
know of their reputation?
um...no :) except that girls don't go into an i.d. class looking for a
boyfriend. i might guess guys with equal, if not more, talents in interior
design go into architecture; or girls choose i.d. for they associae it with
being domestic? no?

interior designer positions; however, you will have to compete with local
students and designers with much better communication skills, culture
background, etc...
Telant is not as important to a designer as to an artist. Most girls in
interior design program will only graduated as a decorator, but not a
designer. Most good designers are men, while most decorators, or we call them
FF&E people, are women.

indeed, these obstacles are real, and i guess especially so in fields which
are strongly cultural. something related is how do interior designers
establish their reputation and get theirselves known to a broader group of
customers?

i'm kind of surprised by this sex dichotomy. as you said talent isn't that
import in i.d., so what fators caused more men being good designers? do
interior designers assume more responsibilities/have more fre

you're right, Mies van der Rohe was their chair. IIT has both full-time and
part-time architecture programs, but i'm not sure how useful they'll be to
me...

no decorator will introduce him(her)self as a decorator; they only do specs,
an interior designer can surely work alone without a decorator.
not many women are good in logical thinking, which is more important than
artistic talent
