A head-on collision on U.S. 26 near Elsie Friday evening has resulted in
minor injuries and caused a massive traffic jam in both directions,
officials and witnesses said.
Details were scarce but Don Hamilton, a spokesman for ODOT, said initial
reports indicated that police and medical workers were on the way, but he
didn’t yet know the nature of the injuries.
The accident was reported at 6:11 p.m.
Chris Schwab, 25, said he and his girlfriend were driving west on the
highway when they saw an eastbound Acura swerve head-on into the Mercedes
directly in front of them.
"It was all a blur," Schwab told the Oregonian. "It was like an explosion."
Schwab said that five people, including three kids, were inside the crippled
Mercedes. All of them got out of the car and appeared to not be seriously
injured.
Two people inside the Acura appeared to suffer serious injuries, Schwab said.
"It's an absolute miracle," he said. "They'll live. I don't know how. But
they'll live."
Schwab said five people from the crash were eventually taken to the hospital
.
Steve Duin, a columnist for The Oregonian, was caught in the traffic jam and
said traffic was stalled in both directions at milepost 17.
