标 题: 求助一下有经验的前辈关于start up negotiation

老板不在家,没有什么人能问,只能来问大家了。
现在有几个疑问。
第一个是关于价钱,
我虽然心里有数大概需要什么仪器,但是对他们的价格范围不是很清楚。
那些大的仪器的价格在网上也基本都查不到,而是需要做quote.
有没有人有各种仪器的价目表什么的?尤其是做生物的,涉及生化试验,细胞培育和
显微光学成像的。如果哪位好心的大侠能把自己当年用的表格和我分享一下更好。
第二个是有关各种费用。
仪器费用是不在话下的了,但是对于人力(工资),可耗品,等等,一般是列多长时间
的?
比方说博士后的工资,是只列一年还是三年都列上去?
第三个是如何讨价还价?比方说假如我想要系里多给我一些启动资金,这个一般是怎么
讲的?
什么样的理由是可以接受的?

First, Congraduation!
The startup usually has been setup for a uplimit by the committee. If you
are reasonable, the power is in Department chair's hand and he can make the
call. I see it as 3 parts when I was thinking about it.
For basic need, you can refer the NIHR01 supply and part of indirect cost
for covering the lab.
For personals, normally 1 student + 1 tech + 1 postdoct (3 year salary).
You do not have to mention how much it is. When you give them such a list,
the department will have no problem to figure it out based on the real
situation in the department.
For equipments, the basic ones and the special ones. For the special one,
find a reason to argue that other people in the department/school can use it
or you like to share the responsibility to offer it for everyone.

This is my 2 cents. But do not be shy to ask more if you animals need to be
covered. I know people get the department resource to pay for the half of
the animal cost for 3 years. When people offer you the position, it means
that they accept you. You can ask the range. In case that you need to
argue for more, argue that you have data for more grant application plan and
the time can save the chance. To department/school, this is an investment.
People feel better when they can see the return.

找一个最近变成AP的,做得实验系统和你相近的,要一个他的wish list.
如果有two-body issues,一定要系里帮忙。
PS:就算是在一个房价比较便宜的州,也不要认为可以容易的在好区买房。最好问一下
有没有housing aid。

The only legitimate leverage for negotiation is to show another offer,
not necessary from a better school. Without that, everything else is
really marginal.
For equipments, you can make a list that you are using in the current
lab/institute. There are essential and optional ones. Most schools
encourage to share with other faculty. It's best to talk to sales rep
yourself to get a quote. The model and price change frequently and any
lists out there are pretty much obsolete. You can list more equipments
than you eventually purchase and save the money for other purpose.
For personnel, it's usually standard for a given institute. You
probably have to give justifications if you go beyond.
Another thing is lab space and number of benches. There are often rooms
to negotiate here.
