Rep. Lamar Smith Reportedly Plans to Reintroduce STEM Jobs Act Bill Next
Friday With a Minor Revision
Report indicates that Rep. Lamar Smith (TX), Chairman of the House
Judiciary Committee, is scheduled to reintroduce this bill adding a
provision that family members of the backlogged STEM immigrant waiters be
issued a nonimmigrant visa to join the principal alien while they wait for
the visa numbers. Readers may recall that this bill was introduced at the
last minute before the recess in the form of suspension of rules that
required two thirds votes to pass the bill and failed. The report indicaes
that the Congressman plans to reintroduce this bill this time around under
regular order that needs only majority votes to pass it. Since Republicans
take majority seats in the House, it is predicted that this bill may pass in
the House during the Lame Duck session. However, there is no indication
that this bill will be able to make it in the Democratic majority Senate
before the 112th Congress sunsets at the end of the year. Unless the
Democrats, particularly President Obama, initiates the comprehensive
immigration reform legislation process quickly, Democrats are expected to
suffer from the apparent Republican strategies of introducing various
piecemeal immigration reform bills, which may distract call for the
comprehensive immigration reform process. Readers are aware that Republican
Senator Rubio is reportedly to introduce so-called ACHIEVE Act which is
quite different version from the tranditional DREAM Act. The Lame Duck
session will have only about two weeks including holidays and thee are only
very limited number of days left before the Lame Duck session ends. |
