So, "a" is omitted.

Chinese, I'm gay, I'm straight... etc.
However it does seem that you cannot omit the "a" in stuff like I'm a
student, I'm a doctor, I'm a basket weaver, I'm a schizophrenic homicidal
maniac... etc.
I don't know why that is, just feels natural that way. Grammar isn't always
logical, just like pronunciation doesn't always follow the same pattern.
Maybe some linguist can explain it better.
