刚进tenure track的时候,也比较拼,被两个资深教授
醍醐灌顶。两个人在其各自领域都非常有名。
一个是美国人,和我一起吃午饭的时候说:
enjoy the life of being on tenure track, but
don't kill yourself for tenure. Not worth it.
一个是台湾老哥,听我们年轻的嚷嚷tenure,funding,他说:
老弟们,你们说的这些都不重要。以后你们会明白,
活得长最重要。

As I always said to my colleague and friends, faculty is nothing but a job.
Enjoy doing is much more important than suffering from the pushing yourself
hard. Tenure should come naturally.

I don't agree.
Those who worked really really hard are the ones who enjoy research most.
Once a research project is started, one just can't stop doing it.
I've seen people who are not so interested in research living a much easier
tenure-track life.
So my suggestion is actually the opposite:
Don't enjoy too much what you do.... so that you can work less and live
longer. Try to hate doing research. That is more healthy.

I don't buy your argument at all.
Two kinds of research: survival and real research. If you are an AP, as most
of us were and are in this stage, >99% does not have the privilege of the
second kind. Hard working doesn't necessarily mean enjoy. If you don't have
publications, then you won't get tenure anywhere. After that, different ppl
may take different career paths of course. Even they work hard, they don't
hate research and I doubt that your view is healthy at all...

You said yourself: enjoy doing. So I suppose it is possible. Now you say 99%
does not have the privilege of enjoy doing... So I am confused by your
logic.
My point is that I see two kinds of people:
1) enjoy doing research, try to maximize research
2) don't enjoy doing research, so basically do it minimum to survive
My observation is that the second type lives an easier life. Speaking about
damage to one's health, the first type definitely is worse.

I was just replying your previous post:
Those who worked really really hard are the ones who enjoy research most.
The hypothesis is simply not true, as I said. Too many counter-examples.
Enjoy doing research is not equal to max research. It is not like business.
I presume that you are talking about quantity. If this is the case, then I
would disagree. Quality is the priority for the established; while quantity
is the evaluation standard for junior faculty to demonstrate that they can
succeed. After that, who cares? On the contrary, there would be negative LPU
effect if you water too much...
