Xiaoyu was my classmate at school, one grade lower than me. She was so
beautiful. We never really "talked" but I saw her at lunch and my friends
said she kept staring at me. I always thought she probably had many
boyfriends.
We came from a same small town in a suburb of Shanghai. But we never met
until we both came to the U.S.
Our university is located in the middle of the U.S. It looked more like a
town than a city. Most Chinese students didn't like to stay there. They
called it 'corn village.' But I liked it cause I liked the sky, the mountain
, and the river over there, especially the fish swimming under it.
I often took my time fishing on weekend when I was not in my advisor's
surveillance list. Each time I could catch a couple of fish home, crappie,
walleye, or large mouth bass. That's my best time in my life.
Little by little, friends around me all knew I was keen on fishing. One day,
she came to sit beside me when I was enjoying my fish lunch.
"Do you have time to take me fishing?" she asked me.
"Of course, I am glad to. How about this saturday?", I almost stood up as if
I would go immediately.
That saturday, she wore a beautiful pink skirt. Pink was her favorite color.
But the weather didn't cooperate well. It kept raining and raining. Most of
the morning, we hid under a bridge to avoid the rain. I couldn't
concentrate on fishing. She could kinda see me staring when she looked at me
. I looked at her and my hot blood urged me to come up to her and say
something but I chickened out.
Later she looked a little bit tired. And we only caught a small bluegill the
whole morning.
"Can you give me this fish?" she asked me when we decided to go home.
"Yes, you can take it." I said.
"Can I release it?" she came to untie the fish from the stringer.
"You don't want to keep it? It tastes ok, not as good as crappie, but better
than a catfish." I explained to her.
"I don't want to cook it." she untied the fish and saw the fish floating
upside down.
"It won't live cause the stringer hurted it too much." I comforted her when
I saw her tears in her eyes.
Next year, I transferred my program to another university. I was warned by
my advisor that I wouldn't be graduated as expected cause I wasted too much
of his time fishing. One day when I came back to my apartment from my new
university, I received a package sent from Xiaoyu.
"Dear gooog,
I would have sent the gift to you sooner. You're so good with fishing. Who
cares if any fish didn't get caught that day? There are so many beautiful
things about it.
It's turned cold and rainy here lately... but I like winter. I'm not sure
how much longer I'm gonna be staying here... I'm going to graduate soon. And
you?

A collapsible fish basket came out when I opened the gift, which I had had
dreamed of for so long and which has been retained in my cupboard ever since. |
