Jim Harbaugh was the star QB at Palo Alto High School, which
was just across the street from Stanford's football facilities.
On Harbaugh's recruiting visits to Stanford, a guy named John
Elway served as his host.
John Elway was in his last college season as Stanford's QB.
He was considered a once-in-a-generation pro QB prospect and
would be drafted #1 the next year by the Colts. Elway ended up
refusing to play for the Colts and forced Colts owner Robert
Irsay to trade him to the Denver Broncos.
In the NFL, the Houston Oilers starting QB Archie Manning was
nearing the end of his long NFL career. He was backed up by
rookie QB Oliver Luck. After the season, Manning was let go by
the Oilers and Luck took over as the starter. Manning and Luck
remained friends and their sons would spend many summers together
in Manning's summer camp for young QBs.
====== 1997 ======
Jim Harbaugh had a injury riddled season as the Colts QB. Only
two years before, Harbaugh had led the NFL in passer rating,
finished runner up in NFL MVP voting, took the Colts within one
dropped pass of a Super Bowl appearance, and was nicknamed
"Captain Comeback" by Colts fans. The Colts finished the 1997
season with the worst record in the NFL and would release
Harbaugh after the season to make room for #1 pick Peyton
Manning, who was considered the best pro QB prospect since John
Elway.
John Elway, at this time, was heading into the first of his two
consecutive Super Bowl winning seasons.
====== 2012 ======
Andrew Luck, who broke many of Elway's passing records at Stanford,
is expected to be drafted #1 by the Colts. Luck could have been
the #1 draft pick the year before too, but he unexpectedly decided
to stay at Stanford for another year despite head coach Jim
Harbaugh leaving for the 49ers. When Andrew Luck made his decision
to return to school, he called a family friend who had made a
similar decision years ago for advice. That guy was Peyton
Manning, who was released by Colts owner Jim Irsay to make room
for Luck.
The 3 teams now considered most likely to sign Peyton Manning are
the 49ers (coached by Jim Harbaugh), the Broncos (ran by executive
John Elway), and the Titans (the former Oilers franchise where
Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning's fathers were teammates 30 years
