EB1A green card for quant Ph.D.s?
The applicant could be a typical quant: a science (non-finance) Ph.D. from a
very top university; working for a top investment bank; with a couple U.S.
patents (formally issued) based on the quant's work.
Conventional wisedom is that non-finance Ph.D.s working as a quant can't
qualify for EB1A since their research field has changed. But recently there
came some news that some quants with an engineering Ph.D. actually got
approved for EB1A.
Any tips on the lawyers who worked on these EB1A cases for quants? Thanks!!
(Really tired of the many inconveniences due to lack of a green card. And
EB2 would take too long) | h*******r 发帖数: 207 | 2 搭车同问,为以防广告之嫌,有知道的朋友能否站内mesg,包子答谢。

for you. It is more of a common sense and rigorous presentation. At the end,
you will be the one making all the technical judgment/argument, and present
the raw materials. So you should focus on the lawyer's general credential
and tracking records, rather than his/her knowledge of your particular field
. Just ask people around you, how many can explain unambiguously what quants
exactly do or contribute in fiance? Then you can bet on your lawyer...
FYI, I was in a similar situation: PhD from a US university in a
quantitative fields, joined Wall St right after graduation. I just got my
EB1-B approved a few months ago, but haven't got my GC yet.I talked to a few
lawyers and eventually decided to work with Liu in Texas, because he is
cheaper and reasonably good. Some lawyers in NYC are pretty good too, such
as Andrew Fair, but are more expensive. I dumped our corporate lawyer
because I don't think he is good at EB1 category in general. I am probably
the first one in my company history to ever try EB1-B. The downside is I
have to picked up the tab.
You are not alone in this journey. I know quite a few friends who got GC
through EB1 category while working in investment banks or hedge funds. Some
used corporate lawyers, others used unknown one-man-show law firms. Most of
us went through the EB1-B category, because it is much easier. It is
difficult to qualify for the third criteria if you joined Wall St fresh. But
you have to convince your company to sponsor your petition, which is tricky
in big firms.
First time to post in BBS. Hope it is helpful. The poor job security in
finance makes GC particularly valuable to us. Most of us are more than
qualified or deserved to get the GC. You just have to spend the time and
make the argument for yourself.
Good luck.
