Fermentation/Biochemical Engineer
Position summary:
SyntheZyme LLC is building an integrated renewable products company using
breakthrough science and an innovative business model to address some of our
planet’s most challenging problems. SyntheZyme first developed its
technology platforms in -HydroxyFatty Acids and Biosurfactants in
the laboratory of Professor Richard A. Gross at NYU-Poly (Brooklyn, NY).
These renewable chemical products are the result of SyntheZyme’s focus on
bridging competency’s of synthetic biology, yeast fermentation technology,
chemistry and application development research. At SyntheZyme, we are
committed to delivering renewable chemicals that are designed to perform
comparably to, or better than, the products they will replace.
Job Description
SyntheZyme is seeking a fermentation scientist to develop and optimize
microbial fermentations for the production of small molecules. Experience
with fermentation process scale-up/scale-down, technology transfer, as well
as fermentation medium and process design is highly desired. We are
specifically seeking an energetic, creative, and highly self-motivated
individual that enjoys challenges in fermentation development involving
different fermentation scales, and develops processes that can be readily
scaled-up. The successful candidate will interact closely with other
SyntheZyme researchers that are focused on further development of
fermentation products via subsequent chemical or biocatalytic
transformations. Other SyntheZyme researchers are addressing application
development of fermentation products in materials, agricultural product and
surfactant/emulsification technologies. The successful candidate will
possess the following characteristics:
• Embrace SyntheZyme’ Core Values.
• Plan, execute, and analyze microbial fermentation process
development experiments
• Responsible for applying the latest knowledge of microbial
physiology, secondary metabolism and biosynthetic pathways to media design
and process optimization.
• Provide feedback and collaborate with analytical chemists and
application scientists at SyntheZyme and partnering institutions working in
synthetic/molecular biology for strain optimization.
• Use scientific literature to address questions in fermentation
process development
Requirements
• Ph.D. in biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, microbiology
, or related discipline.
• Hands-on microbial fermentation experience and familiarity with
analytical techniques necessary for monitoring fermentation performance are
preferred
• Experience in rational and statistical design of experiments related
to fermentation media optimization and process improvement is highly
desirable
• Experience with fermentation processes scale-up/scale-down
experiments is desirable
• Due to the highly collaborative nature of the position, excellent
interpersonal and communications skills are an essential characteristic of a
successful candidate.
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships while
collaborating with other scientists, engineers, and technicians in
fermentation and process development
• Strong organizational, problem solving, and time-management skills
are essential
Qualified candidates should forward a cover letter, resume, pdf copies of
publications/patents and a brief statement of interest to Dr. Richard A.
