Dozens of female lawmakers on Tuesday night wore white, a symbol of the
women's suffrage movement, during the president's address to a joint session
of Congress.
Hillary Clinton made a similar gesture earlier this year, wearing a white
pantsuit to Trump's inauguration. She also wore white at other major moments
during the presidential campaign, including when she became the first woman
to accept a major party's presidential nomination at the Democratic
National Convention in Philadelphia last year.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the decision was a "statement of
values."
"It associates ourselves with our suffragette mothers," she said. "The color
of white, the color purple." |
