Anesthesiology，自己也很高兴, 现在告以段落，我也和大家分享一下我的考试，申请，以及面试的一些心得体会。
１。 我为什么要考 Board。 简单的一句话就是 '不甘心'。我毕业后干过三年心脏麻醉, 然后在药厂混了两年, 98年来美念Ph.D，刚开始念，师兄师姐就告诉我说前途暗淡. 一条路是念Ph.D，考 Board，但当时他们说考试很难，Match 更难，而且必须得有Green Card，所以当时就放弃了这个想法。但我也不想接着念 Ph.D，当时我一个同学在念 Epi Ph.D，说着这个以后找工作不错，于是一学期后转了过去念 MPH in Epi and Biostat, 毕业时IT正是火爆的时候，很多人都去念了IT。生统的工作非常好找，就这样我开始工作了，一直到现在。生统的工作其实满稳定的，收入也还可以。但我一直觉得不考 Board 是很亏的。首先，先不说收入，省的有些人又开始说其他工作如何如何。大夫是一个非常受人尊敬的职业，而且非常稳定。所以Aremican花那么多钱和时间去念医。而且他们允许 IMG 考这个试，这实际就是天上掉的一个大 pie，想一想我们念医并没有花什么钱，现在，你只需要考这个试，就有机会进入这个行业。你啥损失也没有，只有你的时间。但是对我来说，这时间要是不考 Board，也都上网和看电视了。其实干什么都不容易，很多中国人很聪明，又努力，但不一定有很好的机会。但对 CMG来说，要是能考还不考，就太亏了。哪怕你不准备作大夫，先拿到 Certificate 再说。将来的机会总是给有准备的人。
２。我的考试。这版上牛人太多，我不敢多说。我是０９三月开始的，当时是想拿个Certificate，省的自己以后后悔。看了一些考经，发现只有两样东西是大家都very推荐的，USMLEWorld Qbanks and FA, 我看书特慢，fulltime job,没有时间看书，所以直接开始做题。At the beginning 真的是痛苦万分，２０－４０％ 正确 rate，又全是生词，但三个月后就上轨道了。后来又做了 Kaplan Qbank，UWbank for another two rounds, 背了５遍 FA，January ２０１０考的 step 1，最后竟然也是99, very little one though. 然后考了 CS in April and CK in August。其间要了推荐信，做了one week OB in a small hospital in IM。
3. Application and interview in IM:
I applied for over 100 IM programs in east coast on Sep. 1, and got 4
IVs. I do not have any experience in IM and have been away from clinical work for many years, so I was challenged again and again about this question during my interviews. Plus, my scores are so-so and LoR is very ordinary. I wrote my PS when I was on vacation in china at the end of August. Compared to my PS for Anes that was edited by EssayEdge, my PS in IM is too bad. I strongly recommend you get your PS polished by a professional company. They are really good.
4. My application to Anesthesiology.
1) I applied for roughly 80 categorical programs. My big mistake was
that I did not apply for advanced program because it is said the prelim is even harder to get in. but later I knew that if you get admitted by an advanced program, sometimes program will even find a prelim program for you. So for the new applicants for next year, you should apply for both categorical and advanced programs.
2)LoR and PS: I got one LoR from my previous department in China. One
from my previous colleague who is practicing Anes in US. Another one from my current boss and another one from a US doctor whom I shadowed in OB. My PS was polished by EassyEdage and their service is really good.
3) I got two IVs. All AMGs. The first anes IV was in October and that
was also my first IV last year. I prepared a lot of questions and the
interview went pretty well. Their PD was on a clinical duty but managed to talk only to me at the end for about 10 minutes. He told me I am an untraditional applicant for my previous training in Anesthesiology and several publications during my career as a statistician. I asked for prematch on site and he said he would think about it.
I sent them Thank you letter later but did not get any response. Then at Thanksgiving, I sent another letter to the PD and the Chair. This time, the PD replied to me and told me the selection committee discussed the option of prematch for me but because they had offered another two prematch, they could not offer the third one. However, he thought 'highly' of me and would like me to join the program. Till then, I realized I might have a chance to get in that program.
Before Christmas,I sent a card with my family picture to the Chair and the PD. And I also sent a card to other interview members and the administrator, a very nice lady.Then in Feb, I told them I would rank them at the top and I got two very positive response from the Chair and the PD. Till then, I felt I could probably at least match to that program.
My second interview with IU was also a very pleasant interview. They
have 26 positions but only 4 categorical positions. Unfortunately, I did not apply for their advance positions and when I look back, I think that was my biggest mistake in the application for Anes. But anyway, I have stepped into the door and that is most important.
I would suggest the applicants for the next year try their previous
specialty if they still like it, in addition to IM which still has the biggest positions available. Maybe 10 or 20 years ago, Americans did not value much of those clinical experiences in China, but since China has become stronger and stronger and more CMG are doing very well in US, I think they value those experiences much more now. One example is that one of my classmates matched to orthopedics last year and one matched to urology this year. They were already fellows in their specialties in China.
My friends who have got into the door always told me they have not seen
anyone who could not match if he/she was really committed to it. I do
not know if this is true, but I believe it. I wish everyone here could match into their dream programs sooner or later. It is never too late. Good luck to all of you! |

严重同意他们现在开始看重我们国内的行医经验了。所以国内做过临床的人多跟他们讲
讲你国内的行医经历，绝对管用的。 |

如果这个基本问题能自己清楚地回答自己，了，其他的就是具体技术细节和时间早
晚长短的问题而已！
