For my test, I used 11 months to prepare it. ( full time job, part time for
CK).
Final score 250+
NBME form 4 510 (3 months before.)
NBME form 1 600 (1 week before)
The true test is a little easier than NBME.
I strongly recommend doing NBME earlier (at least 2 months before, for part
time preparing CK) and online (at least twice on line). They will report
which part you are weak. After doing the NBME form 4, OBGYN is my weak part.
I spend a full month on it, and the final score is better in this area.
All recommended review materials: Kaplan notes, MTB 2+3, UW Q bank
Review books
1. strong recommend
(1) MTB 2 and MTB3
Someone thinks that MTB 2+3 for CK is similar as FA for step1. I agree it.
My experience is: When you read Kaplan CK notes, add the key points and key
diseases into MTB 2 and MTB3.
When using UW Qbank, add the key points and key diseases into MTB 2 and MTB3
too.
If your time is limited for reading two books, reading internal medicine
part of MTB2 and other parts from MTB3 might be a choice. (I read all two
books, and recommend reading two books for higher score.)
(2) Kaplan notes
IM, surgery and OBGYN are good materials for preparing this test.
Pediatrics note is not so good. But, I can not find a better book for it,
and thus I still used it in my test.
These notes are too long. From other person’s posters, Kaplan CK notes are
also used for Step 3. Thus, it is a good choice to prepare carefully in CK,
which is also used for step 3. I read all these notes.
(3) High yield obstetrics and Gynecology is a good book, which help me a lot
. It is only 184 pages.
OBGYN is my weak part. I read several times Kaplan OBGYN and high yield
obstetrics and Gynecology.
2 Other books, if you have time, you might take a look.
FA for CK. Pediatrics, OBGYN and dermatology are good parts, but they are
not enough. Other parts are general.
3. Kaplan Q book for CK is limited. It is too simple for the true test. I do
not recommend reading it.
Q bank
1. UW Q bank is the best one.
UW Q bank for twice will be better. Pay attention to the content tested for
twice in Q Bank.
It is really a good Q bank. I learn a lot from it.
2. Kaplan Q bank is limited. Only after twice UW Q bank, if you still
have time, you may try it.
I only use it to train my time control. Using 8 blocks from Kaplan Q bank in
one day is used to mimic the true test day. Try to know which time will be
to be used for rest, and how to control your tiredness. The answers from
this Q bank are not so good, and are not needed to take too much time on
them.
( UW Q bank answers are important, and remembering them is key.)
Other experience:
(1) Time control is the key. Prepare for any possible situation. Use the
time checkpoint (eg. 24 Qs in 30 minutes.), If time is used out, skip
the long content Q, make sure the time control.
(2) A good poster for how to effectively read the Qs in CK. His poster
helps me a lot.

Thanks my wife’s support. For the long journey in USMLE, family support is
really important.
