有不少药厂的统计师也是学校的教授跳糟的, 他们很多到了药厂也做得很好,做到

If you consider the percentage of the population, the percentage of
statistical professor is way below the percentage of the doctors. doctors

doctors do not have to explore new scientific inventions. doctors follow the
guide. professors do not have any guide to follow, they guide themselves in
exploration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki
/On_the_Internet,_nobody_knows_you%27re_a_dog
Yet, why do I go through all the troubles to point out your foibles? Because
I want to give you a lesson or two.
(1) You proclaim, "我是统计学教授,年薪16万,能拿一辈子这个工资退休金到老死."
(a) Man, this is United States.
United States is not in decline. However, its public debts (of government of
all levels) is relatively high (though still less than 100% of GDP,
compared with Japan that is inching toward 200% of its GDP). Americans pride
themselves on work ethics, so job benefits are comparatively modest
alongside with those in Europe (but that is why Europeans are not
competitive in productivity).
There is no such posh jobs as yours any more.
Don't you know that Republicans are risking their necks to cut Medicare and
Medicaid?
Don't you know state governments of various states aims to reduce benefits
and pension of state employees? Although the newly inaugurated Republican
governor of Wisconsin grab headlines, Massachusetts (where all branches of
state house is firmly in the hand of Democrats) and New Jersey (Republican
governor and both chambers of state legislature, which are Democratically
controlled, work closely to reduce/abolish collective bargaining power of
state employee unions.
My point is nobody can say for sure that his or her position will not be
eliminated (and your can), salary not reduced, benefits or pensions not cut.
In fact, there was no job in US like this for decades. US is dynamic,
unlike Japan in old days where a worker work the whole life for a company,
which is unsustainable and gradually job security is no longer guaranteed in
Japan.
(b) You do not identify your institution. However, your premise that 能拿一
辈子这个工资退休金到老死 is simply false.
You dupe all other readers, but not me. Alas, I am smarter than you think.
Anybody with common sense knows that a worker, any worker, will not keep 100
% salary after retirement.
As for professorship, I will give you one example.

830. The middle 50 percent earned between $41,600 and $83,960. The lowest 10
percent earned less than $28,870, and the highest 10 percent earned more
than $121,850.
"Earnings for college faculty vary with the rank and type of institution,
geographic area, and field. According to a 2008–09 survey by the American
Association of University Professors, salaries for full-time faculty
averaged $79,439. By rank, the average was $108,749 for professors, $76,147
for associate professors, $63,827 for assistant professors, $45,977 for
instructors, and $52,436 for lecturers. In 2008–09, full-time faculty
salaries averaged $92,257 in private independent institutions, $77,009 in
public institutions, and $71,857 in religiously affiliated private colleges
and universities. Faculty in 4-year institutions earn higher salaries, on
average, than do those in 2-year schools. In fields with high-paying
nonacademic alternatives—medicine, law, engineering, and business, among
others—earnings exceed these averages. In others fields, such as the
humanities and education, earnings are lower. Earnings for postsecondary
career and technical education teachers vary widely by subject, academic
credentials, experience, and region of the country.
"Many faculty members have significant earnings from consulting, teaching
additional courses, research, writing for publication, or other employment,
in addition to their base salary. Many college and university faculty enjoy
unique benefits, including access to campus facilities, tuition waivers for
dependents, housing and travel allowances, and paid leave for sabbaticals.
Part-time faculty and instructors usually have fewer benefits than full-time
faculty have.

Category IIB: Baccalaureate institutions
Category III: Two-year institutions with academic ranks
Category IV: Two-year institutions without academic ranks
(ii) AAUP 2010-11 survey is based on 1,319 reporting institutions, which
reported "salary, comnpensation and benefits" for each teacher (Tables 13

is strictly salaries alone.

To earn 160 K, you must be top of the cream in American statistics: work at

entire US, there are only 330 persons. Congratuation!

"Earnings of physicians and surgeons are among the highest of any occupation
. According to the Medical Group Management Association's Physician
Compensation and Production Survey, median total compensation for physicians
varied by their type of practice. In 2008, physicians practicing primary
care had total median annual compensation of $186,044, and physicians
practicing in medical specialties earned total median annual compensation of
$339,738.
"Self-employed physicians—those who own or are part owners of their medical
practice—generally have higher median incomes than salaried physicians.
Earnings vary according to number of years in practice, geographic region,
hours worked, skill, personality, and professional reputation. Self-employed
physicians and surgeons must provide for their own health insurance and
retirement.
My comment: Please do not despise primary care physicians.

example, whose "mean hourly wage" and "mean annual wage" are $105.82 and $
220,100, respectively.

c**i 发帖数: 6973 | 135 A biologist by training who came from Taiwan, I have lived in US for more
than a quarter century, mostly at Boston, Massachusetts. I am familiar with
medical field in Taiwan and biological field in US, somewhat with medical
and legal fields in US.
We have no idea what you describe yourself is true or not. As they say, "On
the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki
2.0 Faculty and Other Academic Appointments; 2.3 Academic Instructional
Staff Appointments; 2.3.1 Professor Emeritus and Professor Without Tenure (
Retired). MIT Policies & Procedures: A Guide for Faculty and Staff Members.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), undated.
http://web.mit.edu/policies/2/2.3.html
("A professor who retires becomes professor emeritus and may keep the name
of his or her chair, emeritus. Appointments to the rank of professor
emeritus are normally without salary. * * * Professors without tenure (
retired) are eligible for benefits as retirees rather than active employees.
* * * Professors without tenure (retired) must report their outside
professional activities to their department heads annually, as described in
Section 4.4 Conflict of Interest and Section 4.5 Outside Professional
Activities.")
(c) Teachers—Postsecondary, in Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11
Edition. Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Department of Labor.
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos066.htm
* The section "Earnings":
"Median annual earnings of all postsecondary teachers in May 2008 were $58,
* The next section "Wages":
Statistics belongsin "MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE TEACHERS, POSTSECONDARY," whose "
mean annual wage" is $73,480:
"Percentile.............10% ........... 25%..............50%(Median) .......
75% ............90%
Annual Wage......$35,210 ..... $48,020 ...... $65,710 ................$90,
710 .....$125,760"

(iv) Table 13 Number and Percent of Faculty, Average Salary, Average

My comment:
(i) As inidcatred in Table 4:
Category I: Doctoral institutions
Category IIA: Master's institutions
Category IIB: Baccalaureate institutions
Category III: Two-year institutions with academic ranks
Category IV: Two-year institutions without academic ranks
(ii) AAUP 2010-11 survey is based on 1,319 reporting institutions, which
reported "salary, comnpensation and benefits" for each teacher (Tables 13
and 4). On the other hand, BLS's "earnings"
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos066.htm#earnings
is strictly salaries alone.
(3) Let's go to your profession: statistics.
Salary Information: Academic Salary Reports. American Statistical
Association (ASA)
http://www.amstat.org/careers/salaryinformation.cfm
(analyzed by "Keith Crank, ASA Research and Graduate Education Manager";
click "2010- 2011 Academic Statisticians")
To earn 160 K, you must be top of the cream in American statistics: work at
least 6-7 years in a research university AND at 90th percentile. In the
entire US, there are only 330 persons. Congratuation!
(4) Let's pity doctors.
(a) Physicians and Surgeons, in Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11
Edition. Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Department of Labor.
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos074.htm
* section "Earnings":
* Section "Wages": Let's take perennial top earners ANESTHESIOLOGISTS as an
example, whose "mean hourly wage" and "mean annual wage" are $105.82 and $
220,100, respectively.
(b) Doctors have a dog's life.
(i) Nozia Sayyed, ‘Doctors have shorter lifespan than patients.’ Daily
News Analysis (DNA), Feb 1, 2010.
http://www.dnaindia.com/lifestyle/report_doctors-have-shorter-l
("An observation by the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) Pune chapter

physicians. Am J Prev Med 19:155-9 (2000)
