Description:
There are media reports that around 7,000 US troops will join 18,000
Japanese Self-Defense Forces for a three day intensive search for those
still missing in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures after the
earthquake and tsunami. The death toll from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake,
aftershocks, and tsunami has reached 11,578 people with 16,273 people still
missing at this time. A total of 2,776 have been injured. Reports indicate
that 173,600 people are still living in temporary shelters. Damage costs
incurred by the earthquake are expected to reach as high as $310 billion.
The Japanese National Police Agency has announced that they expect the death
toll from the March 11th earthquake and tsunami to exceed 18,000 people.
Aftershocks are expected to continue for some time.
The March 11th earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused widespread
destruction, including building collapses, fire from damaged electrical
infrastructure, landslides, and derailed trains. Efforts continue to
mitigate health hazards from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
