This list includes three measurements of area:
* Total area: is the sum of land and water areas within international
boundaries and coastlines.
* Land area: is the aggregate of all land within international boundaries
and coastlines, excluding water area.
* Water area: is the sum of the surface areas of all inland water bodies (
lakes, reservoirs, and rivers) within international boundaries and
coastlines. Territorial waters are not included unless otherwise noted.
Exclusive economic zones are not included.
Notes
The following two primary sources represent the range (min./max.) of total
area for China and the USA. Both sources exclude Taiwan from the area of
China.
1. The Encyclopedia Britannica lists China as world's third-largest country
(after Russia and Canada) with a total area of 9,572,900 sq km, and the USA
as fourth-largest at 9,526,468 sq km. The figure for the USA is less than in
the CIA Factbook because it excludes Coastal and Territorial waters.
2. The CIA World Factbook lists the USA as the third-largest country (after
Russia and Canada) with total area of 9,826,675 sq km, and China as fourth-
largest at 9,596,961 sq km. This figure for the USA is greater than in the
Encyclopedia Britannica because it includes Coastal and Territorial waters.
Disputed Ranking Explanation:
The dispute for world's third-largest country arose from the inclusion of
Coastal and Territorial waters for USA. This discrepancy was deduced from
comparing the CIA World Factbook and its previous iterations against the
information for USA on Encyclopedia Britannica, particularly its footnote
section.
In sum, according to older versions of the CIA World Factbook (from 1982 to
1996), the USA was listed as the world's fourth-largest country (after
Russia, Canada, and China) with a total area of 9,372,610 sq km. However, in
the 1997 edition, the USA added Coastal waters to its total area (
increasing it to 9,629,091 sq km). And then again in 2007, USA added
Territorial water to its total area (increasing it to 9,826,630 sq km).
During this time, China's total area remained unchanged. In other words, no
Coastal or Territorial water space was added to China's total area figure.
The USA has a Coastal water area of 109,362 sq km, and a Territorial water
area of 195,213 sq km, for a total of 304,575 sq km of additional water
space. This is larger than entire countries like Italy, New Zealand, and
United Kingdom. Adding this figure to the USA will boost it over China in
ranking since China's Coastal and Territorial water figures are currently
unknown (no official publication) and thus cannot be added into China's
