AMERICANS SHOW "UNETHICAL" LEANING WHEN SEALING DEALS WITH CHINA
Americans are more likely to use unethical tactics in business negotiations
with Chinese than with other Americans, while Chinese are more likely to be
unethical when dealing with their fellow countrymen, according to research.
A study, by the Cambridge Judge Business School in collaboration with US and
Chinese academics, looked at the propensity of Americans and Chinese to use
"ethically questionable" negotiating strategies, such as lying, spying or
trying to get their counterparty fired.
"American participants were significantly more likely to use ethically
questionable negotiation tactics in inter-cultural negotiations with Chinese
counterparts than in intra-cultural negotiations with American counterparts
," the study found. "By contrast, Chinese participants were marginally less
likely to use such tactics in inter-cultural negotiations with American
counterparts than in intra-cultural negotiations with Chinese counterparts."
One possible explanation for this imbalance is the perceived likelihood that
the other side in a negotiation will themselves use unethical tactics. In
other words, both American and Chinese businesspeople perceive Chinese
counterparties as less scrupulous.
The study provided some evidence to support this belief. It found Chinese
negotiators were significantly more willing to use unethical tactics in
business negotiations, regardless of who they negotiated with, than
Americans were.
Participants were asked, on a scale of one to seven, their likelihood of
using 16 ethically questionable negotiation strategies.
These included false promises, misrepresentation to strengthen their
position, inappropriate information-gathering about the counterparty's
negotiating position, attacking an opponent's network, and "traditional"
competitive bargaining such as inflated opening demands.
The study then calculated the likelihood that a group would use ethically
questionable negotiating tactics.
On a scale of one to seven, with seven being the least ethical, American
participants had a mean score of 3.00 when dealing with Chinese counterparts
and 2.75 when dealing with American counterparts.
Meanwhile, Chinese participants had a higher score of 3.92 when dealing with
Americans and 4.06 when dealing with Chinese counterparts.
Steven Feldman, a visiting professor at the Guanghua School of Management at
Peking University who specialises in ethical and cultural differences
between the US and China, said researchers needed to be cautious about
making generalisations in terms of national culture.
That is because ethical business behaviour in China can vary considerably
based on regional differences and is also in constant flux.
"In regard to the Chinese inclination to treat fellow Chinese and Americans
ethically similarly, certainly this is not true historically - field studies
from the 1990s and early 2000s show the Chinese highly inclined to take
advantage of westerners," Professor Feldman said. "It is an interesting
question whether this has changed as the Chinese economy has grown and
Chinese executives have become more experienced. Perhaps this study suggests
they have."
According to the research, the unethical behaviour most likely to be used by
Americans related to dubious information-gathering and false promises.
Chinese participants were most likely to make false promises and "attack
their opponent's network" by, for instance, trying to get their counterparty
fired so a new person would take their place.
"Our current analysis suggests that people may change their use of ethically
questionable tactics when they negotiate with someone from a different
country," the study said. "In negotiations, people adopt different models of
what is ethically acceptable for themselves in intra-cultural versus inter-
cultural situations."
