The Dreamliner relies on electrical power much more than its predecessor,
the 777.
Earlier planes used聽bleed air, which is super-hot, super-pressurized air
taken from within the engine, and used it for all kinds of functions, from
de-icing to pressurizing the cabin itself.
But in order to cut down on energy use, the 787 relies instead on electrical
power for that, from some very powerful lithium ion batteries.
Those batteries have of late taken up a new hobby: catching on fire and
freaking the hell out of all of us. | m**c
