Singer Josh Groban writes cheeky tweet about Rich Rodriguez using his song

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez's emotional display of affection for his job
at the team's banquet Thursday night might have won over some true blue
faithful.
But it didn't appear to move songwriter Josh Groban, who seemed to playfully
criticize Rodriguez's decision to play his hit cover of the song "You Raise
Me Up" during the festivities.
"Coach Rodriguez, I'm very flattered," Groban wrote Friday on his Twitter
page, "but crying to You Raise Me Up is SO five years ago."
Attempts by The Detroit News to reach Groban, so he could explain his tweet,
were unsuccessful Friday.
At the banquet, Rodriguez brought the crowd to its feet when he had Groban's
song played over a loudspeaker and locked hands with his wife, Rita.
Two rows of players and administrators did the same as a sign of unity for
the embattled coach.
"I got into coaching so we could make a difference," Rodriguez said at the
event. "The kids raise us up as coaches. There are times we are down, we're
thinking about, 'Geez, is this worth it? Is this worth it for your family?"
The song "You Raise Me Up," according to the website PeerMusic.com, was co-
written by Brendan Graham and Rolf Lovland, and has been covered more than
125 times by artists since 2004.
Groban's cover was nominated for a Grammy and topped the American Billboard
Adult Contemporary charts for six weeks in 2004.
Word of Rodriguez's choice of music inspired several national sports pundits
to sound off Friday.
Tony Kornheiser, who hosts ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" with Michael
Wilbon, said the Groban cover is comparable to tear-jerking tunes from
Better Midler.
"It's in the same league as 'Wind Beneath My Wings and 'The Rose,'"
Kornheiser quipped.
Wilbon described Rodriguez's choice of music as "schmaltzy."
"Reminds me of the days of Lawrence Welk," Wilbon said.
