Urban Meyer spoke with The Gainesville Sun's Pat Dooley on Monday and
reiterated that he hasn't interviewed for Ohio State's head-coaching
position or been offered the job.
But Dooley confirmed what colleague Chris Low and I reported Saturday --
Ohio State has been in contact with Meyer about the job, but no offer has
been made and no deal is in place. Meyer, currently working as an ESPN
college football analyst, also provided this key quote about the possibility
of coming to Columbus.
"I'm in a good place right now mentally and physically. So if something
happens with Ohio State, I'll have a decision to make."
Those words have to be encouraging for many Buckeyes fans who have wanted
Meyer to take over the program from the moment Jim Tressel resigned on
Memorial Day. Often candidates won't even comment about possible other jobs
when a coach is still in place, as Luke Fickell is with Ohio State. The fact
that Meyer mentioned the possibility of an Ohio State offer seems to
confirm his interest.
Meyer also told Dooley he met with Arizona's athletic director about the
head-coaching vacancy there, but said he isn't interested in the job.
Despite his health issues in 2009, Meyer is interested in returning to
coaching, telling Dooley, "I love football. It's what I am. I miss it."
"If there is a decision to be made concerning Ohio State, there will be
a lot that will go into it. But right now, there is no decision to be made."
Key words: if and right now.
It isn't hard to read between the lines here. Meyer wants to be back in the
game. Whether he lands at Ohio State remains to be seen. | N*********6
