How will the radiation affect fish and seafood that have not yet been fished
or harvested?
The great quantity of water in the Pacific Ocean rapidly and effectively
dilutes radioactive material, so fish and seafood are likely to be
unaffected. However, FDA is taking all steps to evaluate and measure any
contamination in fish presented for import into the US.
Steam with radionuclide contamination disperses in the air and deposits on
water/ground surface. Over how wide an area depends, among other things, on
how high the steam is propelled and on wind speeds at that altitude range.
If it deposits on water, it is further dispersed by currents and, ultimately
, the laws of diffusion. If the amount of water available is large, the
concentration becomes very low. However, FDA is taking all steps to evaluate
and measure any contamination in fish presented for import into the US.
What about domestic seafood caught in the North Pacific?
Seafood from the United States waters of the North Pacific is safe to eat.
In the unlikely scenario that airborne pollutants could affect U.S.
fishermen or fish landed in the U.S., FDA will work with NOAA to ensure
testing of seafood caught in those areas, and inspection of facilities that
process and sell seafood from those areas.
Are there dairy products that come from Japan?
Foods imported from Japan constitute less than 4 percent of foods imported
from all sources. Dairy products make up only one-tenth of one percent of
all FDA-regulated products imported from Japan. Most dairy products in the U
.S. market are produced domestically.
Are there food harvesting (fields, fisheries) or processing facilities in
the area of the Fukushima nuclear reactor?
It’s important to note that the damage caused by the earthquake and ensuing
tsunami has reportedly halted production prior to the explosion at the
reactor. While FDA does not track fields or fishery areas in foreign
countries, the Agency does have a list of companies and manufacturing
facilities in the affected area and will be paying special attention to
imports from those locations.
What are the chances of radiation affecting growing areas in the US? What
action will FDA take to ensure the safety of consumers of those products?
At this time, there is no public health threat in the U.S. related to
radiation exposure. FDA, together with other agencies, is carefully
monitoring any possibility for distribution of radiation to the United
States. At this time, theoretical models do not indicate that significant
amounts of radiation will reach the U.S. coast or affect U.S. fishing waters

Is there any possibility of milk being contaminated as a result of cows
eating contaminated grass or feed crop in the U.S.?
At this time, theoretical models do not indicate that harmful amounts of
radiation will reach the U.S. and, therefore, there is little possibility of
domestic milk being contaminated as a result of grass or feed contamination
in the U.S. FDA, together with other agencies, is carefully monitoring any
possibility for distribution of radiation.
What will FDA do if grass or feed crop in the US does become contaminated?
FDA's response will depend on the nature of the risk determined to exist. If
the grass or feed crop in the U.S. becomes contaminated, FDA will evaluate
the risk based on:
A. the extent/type of contamination in terms of isotopes and their levels
B. the area contaminated and whether it is used for food production
C. if used for food production, what types of foods or crops produced and
whether those foods or crops would be further processed and if so, what
foods would ultimately result from that further processing. |
