really true life!

Thank you, NYT for shedding some light on the hardships that these workers
endure.
When my parents and I immigrated from China to the US in 1991, my dad worked
as a delivery man in the evenings, and worked towards his master's in civil
engineering from City College during the daytime. He told me that you
basically had three choices as a male coming from mainland China with no
money: you can deliver food, wash dishes, or, if you have passable English,
be a waiter.
He took me twice to the Chinese restaurant where he worked to show me what
hard work is about. I sat on the crossbar while he peddled around the Upper
East Side. He told me about the times he's been mugged while making a
delivery, and the time that a car hit him, ran over his bike, but luckily
not his body.
I was too young and immature to appreciate his sacrifices at the time. I
used to be ashamed to tell my classmates what my dad did for a living, but
years later, I became so incredibly proud of him.
Tipping is a personal choice. I tend to tip delivery men generously because
I see a bit of my dad in each man.

“
