If I were you I'd just get all-mountain skis. Powder skis are a bit too
specialized imo, if I go to a resort specifically SEEKING powder, I might as
well just rent them for a day or so.
All mountain skis can also do powder but obviously not as specialized.
Unless you are always seeking to ski in powder and not doing much skiing on
groomed slopes, just get all mountain.

As the name suggests, the key difference is powder skis are specifically for
powers. They are usually fat (and you need to get long ones), soft, and
light. Skiing in powder is a lot different from skiing on groomers. For a
beginner, all-mountain is your best bet unless you ski in UT/CO most of the
time.

same for boarders. that you can ride in the powder doesn't mean you can ride
well. Powder is not easy to ride for boarders either, although a lot better
than skiers.

165 sounds about right. There really aren't any "bad" ski brands or series,
as the sport is still more or less a premium sport with expensive gears.
There should be plenty of shops where you are and stuff are always on sale,
just go ask someone knowledgeable for all-mountain skis.
BTW Skis aren't everything - i'd rather spend a bit more time finding a pair
of comfortable boots than researching what skis you should be getting.
Frankly unless you are looking at some pretty extreme conditions they are
all more or less the same to the casual recreational skier -- 2 pieces of
board of varying length and width. :o

it depends on the brand. actually the effective length depends on the shape
of the ski as well. my perspective is that length is just one factor of the
equation. the shape, weight, stiffness all play important roles. I have no
problem sacraficing a couple of centimetres in length for other factors.

Big difference - you can't test it before you buy on Amazon/eBay.
For your first pair I strongly recommend you go to a local shop and have
them take your feet's measurement and recommend a pair of boots that best
fit you.
Remember also that most of the boots you buy may be Euro sized, so there is
also some sizing variation as well. I would not order it online unless you
are very experienced.
