(real or fake) that have happened in China since 1949. She believe that
American sociologists should not visit this country because the people there
suffer a great deal from regular violation of human rights. However, real
sociologist will never just blame the less-developed and leave the miserable

As a sociology student from the People’s Republic of China and interested
in this huge developing country, I was glad to see the arrangement of ASA
tour to China in 2008. I hope the tour would be a great opportunity for
American sociologists to know this country and hopefully stimulate more
serious academic studies. Unfortunately, I did not see any hope of such kind
of serious studies in Professor Leslie Irvine’s comments on the tour. To

，不被follow 等），因为这看上去是替中国辩护，也不很professional. 就说你即使
要了解中国黑暗的地方，也得去中国实地看，而不是读二手新闻报道。

国为荣。最过分的一个说，一切已经变成书的对中国的阐述都是过时的，你想在了解中
国上不落伍？也许你天天看Wallstreetjournal才能基本做到。这可是做theory的老老
头欧。
这个食古不化的活化石，我们不如让她在那里丢人现眼。 |

I find Professor Irvine’s portrayal of China highly offensive. In her
letter to Footnotes (May/June 2007), she demonized China as “the most
brutal nation” and compared China to Nazi Germany based on prejudiced and

writer还写，中国办奥运搞假盛世，并不能让这个政府持续多久，看看1936年柏林奥运
会就知道了。也是把中国政府比作纳粹。
