scholarships 。

receive a 1098 T. Then you have to report the income from scholarships, so
you can take tuition as deduction or credit. |
L****y 发帖数: 61 | 3 Thank you for your answer. But I have another question. I have received 1098
T, but no W2 for the scholarship. If I claim my child as a dependant, how
can I report the my child's taxable scholarship into my 1040a tax return
form? |
s******g 发帖数: 654 | 4 You can just file another tax return for your child. On your own tax return,
you take your child as a dependent. |
L****y 发帖数: 61 | 5 But according to Table 2 in IRS Publication 501, a dependent do not need to
file his own tax return if his earned income (taxable scholarship is
regarded as earned income ) is less than $5450.The problem is that dependent
's earned income can not be filled into my tax return when I use E-file
because of no W2 for that taxable scholarship.
Thanks a lot |

because there are only my spouse and myself income can be input and no
dependent name there. |
s******g 发帖数: 654 | 8 As I said, file your child's tax return for your own sake. Simple and clear.
Need not to file doesn't mean you cannot file it. |

But my child did not receive any W2 for the scholarship but 1098T. The 1098T
give the total amount of all scholarships and let youself to separate the
taxable and nontaxable. How can we determine how much of them is taxable
without any official form?

s******g 发帖数: 654 | 11 You mention the scholarships is not more than 5450. That means you can
report it as all taxable income. Then just use the standard deduction to
offset that income. It is simplest way to file this return. |
L****y 发帖数: 61 | 12 I understand it. Thanks a lot. |
L****y 发帖数: 61 | 13 But I still insterested in how to determine taxable and non taxabe award,
which I may need to know for my next 2009 tax return. I know that grants and
scholarships used to buy text book is non taxable. Is it OK if I report
this tax free part with the receipt of the books attached to my tax return?
I also hold some bills from the University, may I attach them in my tax
return to show the tax free part of the scholarship. |
