The Best New Game of 2010
Posted in FEATURES on 06. Dec, 2010
In this first part of News24Games’ look at the top gaming offerings of 2010
, we’re covering new franchises and original intellectual property. This
industry may thrive on sequels such as Generic Third-person Shooter Man 2
and The New Adventures of Ace Mc-Stab Yo Face 4, but there’s always room
for new ideas in the gaming biz. And if they’re good enough, they may even
get a sequel, thus completing the cycle. Words by Darryn Bonthuys.
Best New Game of 2010: Darksiders
Darksiders didn’t just blow us away; it punched us in the face, kicked our
nuts in and threw us down a bottomless pit of awesome gaming.
Taking inspiration from titles such as The Legend of Zelda and God of War,
Darksiders managed to perfectly balance puzzle-solving antics with brutal
gameplay that saw players unleash the fury of the apocalyptic horseman War
in his personal quest for vengeance.
As well as being fun to play, the game featured gorgeous graphics and
artistic direction from comic book legend Joe Madureira, giving players
visuals that were both unique and gorgeous, and all of this works together
to make Darksiders our Best New Game of 2010.
Honorable Mentions:
Bayonetta
Cheesy, sexy and ridiculously epic, Bayonetta took the formula for an over
the top action-packed romp against all manners of monsters to ludicrous
levels, combining fast-paced gunplay with traditional melee action that
would make Dante from Devil May Cry look twice.
Vanquish
While most action games like to leave players with a bit of breathing space
before things get a little too out of hand, Vanquish decided to buck that
trend and drop players knee-deep in a future war involving gigantic robots
and mech suits that were quite possible stolen from Tony Stark’s Iron Man
vault.
Vanquish may have been light on story and substance, but it more than made
up for it with abundant amounts of gratuitous action and straight-up fun.
Alan Wake
Five years in the making – and actually worth the wait for a change. A
short game, Alan Wake still brought an absorbing experience with a fantastic
story, well-balanced gameplay and hauntingly effective visuals that
reminded gamers why they should be afraid of the dark in the first place.
An eerie title with a strong artistic vision, Alan Wake also featured two
DLC packs, The Signal and The Writer, which wrapped up the current plot
while laying seeds for a potential sequel.
The ‘What Were They Thinking?’ Award:
Dante’s Inferno
How could such a promising game turn out so wrong? On paper, Dante’s
Inferno had everything going for it: killer enemies and bosses, cool levels
based on the circles of hell itself and a story that would be an adrenaline-
fueled adaptation of the classic poem.
Instead, gamers were presented with a title that came across as a series of
badly thought out ideas quickly cobbled together to make some cash. The
combat mechanics were there, but hampered by a fixed camera and too much
reliance on quick-time events. The circles of hell, while initially
impressive, quickly gave way to repetitive design and poor planning. The
game’s only saving grace is that it takes just 3-4 hours to complete,
giving Dante’s Inferno our ‘What Were They Thinking?’ award for worst new
game of 2010. | p*******7 发帖数: 581 | 2 Honorable Mentions:
