Thanks Kenny for your great advice. The match is pretty much like you
described. I won by 6-4, 4-6 and tie break 7-5. A great experience for me.
Here are some thoughts/questions I have after the game:
1. I surprised myself that I was pretty peaceful mentally throughout the
game. Concentrate and focus on the coming ball helps a lot. Don't think too
much about the 2nd serve since it would have made me much more nervous.
2. Try varieties on serve. In a second round I won a serving game by
changing to close slice serve. The opponent was used to standing on the
baseline and had a hard time to reach for the short serve.
3. Be more confident on back hand. Although I am doing ok with my double
backhand, I sliced 90% of it. I guess it's a combination of lazy feet and
lack of confidence.
4. I did pretty bad with middle court balls, no matter topspin/slice/volley.
What is the best way to improve it?
About me, played for fun before and getting serious this year. I am taking
lessons. According to my coach, I am doing great (relatively) with my
baseline forehand/backhand, mid-court and front court are poor. Serves are
unpredictable due to the lack of control (both toss and hitting the ball). I
can do slice serve with 11 clock toss, flat serve with 12 clock toss and
top-spin with 12 clock toss.
Please help me on how to improve overall. :-)
My opponent, 51 years old. Played tennis for 40 years. He could serve very
powerful but double-fault a lot. Stable forehand/single backhand but not
powerful. volley are better than me. Seems more concerned about winning. I
felt pretty lucky to win in the end. | a*m
