18:30-31;36:31;赛30:22;诗51:4;耶31:18-19;珥2:12-13;摩5:15;诗119:128;
:8)。

CHAPTER 15
OF REPENTANCE UNTO LIFE
1. Repentance unto life is an evangelical grace, the doctrine whereof is to
be preached by every minister of the gospel, as well as that of faith in Chr
ist.
2. By it, a sinner, out of the sight and sense not only of the danger, but a
lso of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins, as contrary to the holy na
ture, and righteous law of God; and upon the apprehension of his mercy in Ch
rist to such as are penitent, so grieves for, and hates his sins, as to turn
from them all unto God, purposing and endeavoring to walk with him in all t
he ways of his commandments.
3. Although repentance be not to be rested in, as any satisfaction for sin,
or any cause of the pardon thereof, which is the act of God's free grace in
Christ; yet it is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may expect par
don without it.
4. As there is no sin so small, but it deserves damnation; so there is no si
n so great, that it can bring damnation upon those who truly repent.
5. Men ought not to content themselves with a general repentance, but it is
every man's duty to endeavor to repent of his particular sins, particularly.
6. As every man is bound to make private confession of his sins to God, pray
ing for the pardon thereof; upon which, and the forsaking of them, he shall
find mercy; so, he that scandalizeth his brother, or the church of Christ, o
ught to be willing, by a private or public confession, and sorrow for his si
n, to declare his repentance to those that are offended, who are thereupon t
o be reconciled to him, and in love to receive him.

CHAPTER XV
Of Repentance unto Life
I. Repentance unto life is an evangelical grace,[292] the doctrine whereof i
s to be preached by every minister of the gospel, as well as that of faith i
n Christ.[293]
II. By it, a sinner, out of the sight and sense not only of the danger, but
also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins, as contrary to the holy n
ature, and righteous law of God; and upon the apprehension of his mercy in C
hrist to such as are penitent, so grieves for, and hates his sins, as to tur
n from them all unto God,[294] purposing and endeavoring to walk with him in
all the ways of his commandments.[295]
III. Although repentance be not to be rested in, as any satisfaction for sin
, or any cause of the pardon thereof,[296] which is the act of God’s free g
race in Christ;[297] yet it is of such necessity to all sinners, that none m
ay expect pardon without it.[298]
IV. As there is no sin so small, but it deserves damnation;[299] so there is
no sin so great, that it can bring damnation upon those who truly repent.[3
00]
V. Men ought not to content themselves with a general repentance, but it is
every man’s duty to endeavor to repent of his particular sins, particularly
.[301]
VI. As every man is bound to make private confession of his sins to God, pra
ying for the pardon thereof;[302] upon which, and the forsaking of them, he
shall find mercy;[303] so, he that scandalizeth his brother, or the church o
f Christ, ought to be willing, by a private or public confession, and sorrow
for his sin, to declare his repentance to those that are offended,[304] who
are thereupon to be reconciled to him, and in love to receive him.[305]
[292] Zechariah 12:10. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and the
y shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, a
s one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one
that is in bitterness for his firstborn. Acts 11:18. When they heard these t
hings, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also
to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
[293] Luke 24:47. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preach

[294] Ezekiel 18:30-31. Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every
one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves
from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away
from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you
a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ezeki
el 36:31. Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that we
re not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquitie

e this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest
, and be clear when thou judgest. Jeremiah 31:18-19. I have surely heard Eph
raim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as
a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; fo
r thou art the LORD my God. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and
after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even
confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. Joel 2:12-13. Ther
efore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and
with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and
not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and m
erciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil
. Amos 5:15. Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the

venge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
[295] Psalm 119:6, 59, 106. Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect
unto all thy commandments.... I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto
thy testimonies.... I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep t
hy righteous judgments. Luke 1:6. And they were both righteous before God, w
alking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 2 Kings

ding to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
[296] Ezekiel 36:31-32. Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your
doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for

n ways, O house of Israel. Ezekiel 16:61-63. Then thou shalt remember thy wa
ys, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy
younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy coven
ant. And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I
am the LORD: That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open th
y mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for al
l that thou hast done, saith the LORD God.
[297] Hosea 14:2, 4. Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him

perish. Acts 17:30-31. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but no
w commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day,
in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he h
ath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath
raised him from the dead.
[299] Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is ete

an; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil
.... Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins
be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crims
on, they shall be as wool.
[301] Psalm 19:13. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let th

to the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I
have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfo

njurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief....
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus
came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
[302] Psalm 51:4-5, 7, 9, 14. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and do
ne this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakes
t, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in
sin did my mother conceive me.... Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean
nd blot out all mine iniquities.... Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousnes
s. Psalm 32:5-6. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I n
ot hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou for
gavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. For this shall every one that is godly
pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of
great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.
