Through the centuries a non-Calvinist understanding of Scripture concerning
human responsibility and ability has been ably expressed by many Christian l
eaders.
A prominent Baptist wrote, "The individual not only must act for himself he
is the only one who can. God has made him competent." 11
A.H. Strong insisted, "Yet there is a certain remnant of freedom left to man
.... The sinner can ... seek God 'from motives of self-interest ... the sin
ner can ... give attention to divine truth." 12
Griffith Thomas wrote, "Total depravity does not mean the absolute loss of .
.. the freedom of the soul in choosing, enabling it to determine conscious a
ction. In this sense our freedom is real and the Fall has not affected it ..
.. Fallen man has the faculty of will, as he has other faculties .. . ."13
In the same vein, W. L. Pettingill argued from Scripture, "Whosoever will ma
y come. He is only to come, and God does all the rest." 14 |
