MILWAUKEE – Cities around the country that have installed energy-efficient
traffic lights are discovering a hazardous downside: The bulbs don't burn
hot enough to melt snow and can become crusted over in a storm — a problem
blamed for dozens of accidents and at least one death.
"I've never had to put up with this in the past," said Duane Kassens, a
driver from West Bend | a****l 发帖数: 8211 | 2 I think this is very normal during engineering process. Quite often when you
fixed some problem, other hidden problem comes out.

installing weather shields,
adding heating elements like those used in airport runway lights, coating
the lights with water-repellent substances..."
How much money will all these technologies and devices cost?
How much carbon will have to be burned during the manufacturing process of
these remedies?
How much more labor cost will be involved to fix the more complicated
engineering design in the long run?
It sounds like the best solution would be to hire more union workers

actually, as you pointed out, the energy consumption of traffic lights
across the nation does not come up with a negligible number. why bother with
that?
It's different story when it comes to hundred millions of homes and offices
that account for a big chunk of energy use.
