In a statement today trampling on the FCC's status as an independent agency
by demanding they reduce the Internet to a public utility, President Obama
said:
"I am asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to answer the
call of almost 4 million public comments, and implement the strongest
possible rules to protect net neutrality."
He's lying.
Most of the comments the FCC received that spoke directly to the issue were
expressly opposed to reducing the Internet to a government-controlled public
utility.
We know because we facilitated well more than 800,000 of them through our
StopInternetRegulation.org website, which was more than the collaborative
efforts of all of the major liberal organizations pushing for regulation.
But Obama is strong-arming the FCC into doing it anyway, which means the
Internet would become subject to total government control like the old Ma
Bell monopoly phone system.
It also means a huge tax hike.
Former FCC commissioner Harold Furchgott-Roth explained: "By classifying
broadband access services as 'interstate telecommunications services,' those
services would suddenly become required to pay FCC fees. At the current 16.
1% fee structure, it would be perhaps the largest, one-time tax increase on
the Internet."
This is not what America voted for last week.
We can't let it happen. The only way to stop it now is to get Congress to
step in and block what President Obama is proposing.
