bring jobs back from China and Mexico’?
Simple: Tariffs, non-tariff trade barriers, staffing regulations requiring
local hires, and regulations taxing overseas profits
The wage differential between our workers and those in the third world also
existed in the 1950’s and 1960’s. But we also had tariff and non-tariff
trade barriers that limited competition from the outside. During this
period, our economy grew by leaps and bounds.
Since we opened our borders to imports and allowed corporations to move
operations overseas, worker incomes have stagnated and fallen. Unions have
lost power. We lost control of our food chain. Our low-skill workers have
no opportunity to work their way out of poverty. We are not getting richer
by buying cheap stuff from overseas.
So, since this economic change happened because of a change in government
policy, we can change back to the system that worked in the past.
Just because you can sew underwear cheaply in a sweat-shop in Bangladesh
does not mean that you cannot sew it in a union shop here. It will cost
more. But it means fellow Americans will have better jobs.
If you insist that tee-shirts must be made by child labor overseas, you are
a bad person and a bad American. |
