SANTA ANA Federal agents descended on a convenience store Wednesday morning,
May 3, with a search warrant in connection with what their agencies alleged
was a $2 million food-stamp fraud.
Euclid Market, at Euclid Street and McFadden Avenue, and its father-daughter
owners are the focus of an investigation that involves the U.S. Department
of Agriculture Office and the Internal Revenue Service.
The authorities contend the pair illegally have pocketed $2 million since
January 2014.
For years, Jose Garcia Olivo and Johanna Garcia “engaged in food-stamp
fraud” by giving customers cash in exchange for Electronic Benefit
Transfer
benefits, according to an affidavit for the search warrant filed in U.S.
District Court on Friday, April 28.
The store would allegedly give patrons less cash than the EBT card value
rung up, the document says, pocketing the rest.
The father and daughter also failed to report much of their income to the
IRS, authorities said.
Hours after entering the Euclid Market, agents walked out with bags marked
“evidence” and what appeared to be a gambling machine.
While agents were serving the warrant at the strip-mall market, other
investigators were doing the same at a light-blue mobile home two blocks
away, where the pair were believed to live. There, officers arrived with
guns drawn.
The father and daughter or any representative could not be reached for
comment. Federal officials declined to talk as well. |
