As the Ford Mustang’s 50th anniversary draws nearer, work on the vehicle
that will help celebrate that milestone, the sixth-generation Mustang,
continues. After catching numerous early 2015 Mustang test mules late last
year, our spy photographer has caught what very well may be our first true
look at what the next-gen Mustang will look like.
The first thing that stands out about this heavily camouflaged Ford Mustang
mule is just how small it is. Even with a limited frame of reference, you
can’t help but get the impression that the next Mustang is going to be much
smaller and lower-slung than it’s ever been before. Peeking through the
heavy camouflage are thin, Evos-inspired headlights, and though it’s
difficult to see, possibly a trapezoidal grille similar to the one found on
current Mustangs.
Around its flanks we can see that the 2015 Mustang will have a smaller
greenhouse than before, with sleeker side mirrors, sharp-creased rocker
panels, and big brakes. The new Mustang will retain its long hood and short
rear deck, as well as a fastback body style, though it’s difficult to
determine just how the rear deck will look.
Codenamed S550 (superseding the current S197 generation) the 2015 Mustang
will be powered by a base 3.7-liter V-6, with the 2015 Mustang GT getting
Coyote power in the form of an upgraded 5.0-liter V-8. Europe will get an
EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 for its Mustang, with the possibility of
that engine also making it to the U.S. As we’ve seen on past test mules,
the most controversial feature of the current-generation Mustang — its
solid-rear axle — will be replaced by an independent rear suspension.
The 2015 Mustang will likely debut in January 2014 at the Detroit Auto Show,
and go into production in July of next year, paying homage to the original
“1964½” 1965 Mustang. | d*****3
