Hello all!
my first post here!! glad i ran into these forums and this post as well
so i've started crabbing again for the past month or 2 after a few years
hiatus, i recently got back from pacifica pier yesterday after about the
4th attempt. 1st attempt was 2 weeks prior to the dungie season opening and
boy i tell you it was great! we had 1 snare and 3-4 nets in the water and
every pull we had keeper males and a couple females as well (and of course
they all went back into the water until the season allowed), boy were we
excited for dungie season!!!! we also caught a nice 6"+ red rock that made
for good eating. that was pretty much a feeler for the pier since its been
awhile for myself and crew. That day there were a few people who were
illegally sneaking dungies home (keeper & under sizes) and were pretty much
ruining the season for everyone.... SO BEWARE!!!
when dungie season came around we went there at the opening time (4am)
and the pier was PACKED shoulder to shoulder, lines were getting crossed,
tempers were flaring catches were lost and over all it was a bad experience
to say the least, we ended taking home 1 keeper male (luckily) and that was
about it on a 6hr trip.
Fast forward to this week, i've taken 2 trips and both have been at
night and both trips at +/- 2hrs of low tide. our catches were very minimal,
the first trip which was this last tuesday we caught 2 red rocks and 2
dungie male keepers from a 5 hr trip between 2 snares and 3 nets using
chicken and squid. On Thursday (yesterday) we went home empty handed using
the same gear & time frame but this time we blanketed the whole pier and
nothing. yesterdays catch was very very minimal, the whole time we were
there i believe i saw 5 keepers being caught out of the WHOLE pier! there
were many people who were there since 8am and so on ( keep in mind we got
there at around 6pm EEEEKK!!!!) with about 1 keeper for dinner.
my personal opinion is that its a little too close still to opening
season, i took into consideration the amount of bait in the water, amount of
crabs being taken home ( legally and illegally, trust me there are a lot of
shady people out there on the pier) and the time we were there and we haven
't been so lucky, and i believe it to be the consensus out there, there just
weren't that many people taking any (legal) crab home. im a fairly positive
person and a firm believer in kharma, those who mean well and do well to
others will get the same treatment in return, but there are those on the
pier who can care less for laws & regulations and that could be the cause of
the slim catches, but i'll surely keep trying, its inevitable i spoke to
the owner of one of the local bait shops ( the one closer to the freeway)
and he said the crowd usually doesnt die down till about a month or so, and
that will most likely be when i'll try again out there. for now, the results
that i've seen lead me to believe that the probability is pretty low and it
'll be smarter to wait awhile for the crowds to trickle off. i hope that
answered your question ( im sure it was overkill, hehe, sorry for the
lengthy post) but i say you still make the trip out there and experience it,
you could be one of the luckier ones and come home with some tasty dinner,
