The three abalone divers who died off the North Coast during a 24-hour
period this weekend were the first deaths of the year and the most in a
brief period of time since three abalone divers died over two days in 2007.
All three divers were from the Bay Area men.
Two divers died in 2012, near Jenner and the town of Mendocino, and in 2011
four abalone divers died off of the North Coast including two in April
within two days, according to Press Democrat records.
The diver who died Sunday morning while looking for abalone in rough water
off of a Fort Bragg beach was 50-year-old Henry Choy of San Bruno, said
Mendocino County Deputy Coroner Scott Polma Monday.
The other Sunday victim was Kenneth Liu, 36, of San Francisco, said the
Sonoma County Coroner’s Office Monday. Liu became caught in a rip current
while diving off of Fisk Mill Cove in northern Sonoma County.
On Saturday afternoon, retired Pacifica firefighter Cedric Collett, 66, died
while diving for abalone off of a Sea Ranch beach. He was found about 15
feet below the surface, still wearing his weight belt.
The triple fatalities started with Collett’s death at about 1:15 p.m.
Saturday, followed by Liu’s death at 8:58 a.m. Sunday and finally Choy’s
death sometime after 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Choy’s friends called 911 at 9:30 a.m., asking for help at MacKerricher
Beach north of Fort Bragg for a diver missing in the ocean.
An extensive search was conducted, involving state parks, Mendocino County
deputies, the U.S. Coast Guard, Fort Bragg firefighters and the Sonoma
County sheriff’s helicopter. The helicopter crew found him at 11:10 a.m.,
about 15 feet under water, still wearing his weight belt.
Choy had been abalone diving with friends and family when he got into
trouble in rough water, said Polma.
“Friends saw him in distress. They couldn’t get to him because of rough
conditions,” Polma said.
Family members said Choy had some experience with abalone diving.
“This was not his first time but he was not a veteran diver,” said Polma.
Autopsies for Collett and Liu were scheduled for today in Sonoma County.

三名来自湾区采鲍客在周末前后接连于北湾不同海域遇溺毙命，其中两名死者为华
裔男子，50岁的香港移民Henry Choy（音译：蔡亨利）及36岁的Kenneth Liu(音译：刘
肯尼)。三宗遇溺案为自4月采鲍鱼季节开始以来，首次于该区域发生的伤亡意外，亦是
自2007年24小时内发生最频繁的连环遇溺案件。蔡姓男子的亲属指，蔡亨利富有二十多
年的潜水采鲍鱼经验，所以家人对于意外都感到十分突然。
蔡氏一家周一从殡仪馆回到圣勃雷诺市（San Bruno）的家，每人都显得哀伤万分
。对于蔡亨利的突然离世，他们不愿多谈。
爱好潜水廿多年
据蔡亨利的一名亲属指，蔡亨利与哥哥二人热爱潜水采鲍鱼，两人二十多年前已开
始这项嗜好，所以潜水经验非常丰富。蔡亨利通常与哥哥一同出海采鲍鱼，唯独今次蔡
亨利与两名旧同学同行。该亲属亦指，由于潜水活动富危险性，家人曾多次反对蔡亨利
与哥哥出海，但无奈二人深爱出海钓鱼及采鲍鱼，所以屡劝不果。虽然蔡亨利并不喜爱
吃鲍鱼，但总喜爱把采摘到的鲍鱼带回家与家中妻儿分享。
据该亲友，蔡氏一家自三十多年前从香港移民到美国。家中育有一子一女，一人刚
从大学毕业，另一则仍在大学求学。蔡亨利于三藩市的日航酒店（Hotel Nikko） 担任
维修工作多年。
周末的三宗遇溺毙命案分别发生在不同地。索奴玛县县警沙展Ed Hoener称，每天
都有许多人来潜水，伤亡案件并非不寻常，但接连三天？连续发生三宗死亡案则属特别
罕见。
据曼多西诺县（Mendocino County）助理法医Scott Polma，华裔男子蔡亨利29日
早上在布拉格堡海滩（Fort Bragg beach）遇溺。与蔡亨利一同出海的友人在早上9时
30分在MacKerricher Beach拨打911求救，指一名潜水员在海中失踪。助理法医指出，
同行的友人虽然眼见蔡亨利遇险，但无奈环境恶劣，以致友人未能伸出援手，眼巴巴看
着蔡亨利被风浪卷去。
包括曼多西诺县县警，美国海岸巡逻队（U.S. Coast Guard），布拉格堡（Fort
Bragg）消防员及索奴玛县（Sonoma）县警联手展开搜索。终于在11时10分，索奴玛县
县警的直升机发现沉在水中的蔡亨利，当时他身上仍带着重量腰带。Scott Polma，蔡
亨利当时可能被缠于岩石缝中。
另一名遇溺华裔男子刘肯尼则于28日早上8时50分于Fisk Mill Cove对出海域遇溺
。据索奴玛县县警Hoener表示，刘肯尼在岩石旁被离岸流（Rip Currents）冲出大海。
他指，刘趁退潮时寻找鲍鱼，当他被卷出大海后，同行的一名友人听见刘的呼叫声，马
上游出海中尝试营救，却无法及时抓到他。其后，由直升机搜索找回他的尸首。
刘肯尼的表亲George Lui在其中一篇新闻报道留言悼念在意外中去世的刘肯尼。其
中一位留言者Hoss JackAronda回应指，刘肯尼遇害当天，他的朋友曾替刘肯尼作心肺
复苏，连同在场另有其他人几经努力亦无法挽回，对于刘肯尼的离世，他表示深切同情。
退休消防员疑病发
第三名遇溺死者为66岁退休消防员 Cedric Collett，他于星期六下午一时于Sea
Ranch Beach遇溺。县警Hoener指出，Collett明显是有丰富经验的潜水员，目前正在调
查他在水底时是否遇到突发的病变，Collett及刘肯尼的尸检预定于周一在索奴玛县进
行。
每年的采捕鲍鱼季节由4月1日至6月30日及8月1日至11月30日。采捕鲍鱼危险性非
常高，因为加州法例禁止鲍鱼捕猎者使用任何的潜水设备，所以鲍鱼捕猎只能徒手潜水
。有专家建议，采捕鲍鱼最好与同行者合作互相帮忙，避免单独行事。

野生的加州红鲍必复是7寸以上的才能keep，听说是一年大约长一寸，那些十二寸的大
家伙大概老得都可以磕牙了。沙西米的话可能好些。

tragedy like these are often stacked by doing a few wrong things together:
having too much of weight/poor physical conditioning/pushing too hard/bad
weather/avoid tangling and wrong handling of tangling
