2014年底发布的10.x版添加了新的pkg（pkgng）管理二进制包，旧的pkg_*全部淘汰，
再也不用啥都从Ports编译了
Gentoo若干年前因为山寨Ports的Portage火了一把，现在也不行了。从源码编译实在蛋疼
Debian因为稳定著称，但是stable的包都很老。CentOS/RHEL系就更不用说了
为啥Ubuntu LTS那么多公司部署？其实Ubuntu安全性、稳定性真不如Debian，就是因为
小白鼠多，出了事有人垫背，一荣俱荣一损俱损，运维在心理上有安全感一些。说通俗
点就是抱团取暖
Arch真心爽，只有真正坚强的运维才敢上。pacman行云流水，ABS也能个人定制编译
再说FreeBSD，以前就靠Ports主力，在9.x的时候pkg_*还没啥可用的。现在pkg就不同
了，基本上什么package都有现成的，版本比Ubuntu LTS新太多了，我感觉在一定程度
上甚至都可以和Arch相提并论了。pkg就是pacman的定位，Ports的质量控制又甩社区

版本app支持的，你需要装哪一个都行，distrowatch上显示的只是每个branch支持的最
高package版本而已
举个例子：

ATT出了UNIX，源码到了UCB，连改带编出了BSD．
后来到了BSD4.3，UNIX的拥有者和BSD打官司，搞得大家不太敢用BSD．
Linux刚出来，新写的kernel，没有版权纠纷，用的人越来越多。
BSD后来出了BSD 4.4 lite，把UNIX System V claim的东西都删掉了，解决了版权纠纷
，缺的部分重新写。后来衍生出一批BSD系统，OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD等等。BSDi
是卖钱的。
MacOS X是基于MACH+FreeBSD的Kernel。Apple还雇了几个FreeBSD的key developer。
FreeBSD用UFS，FreeBSD v7要用Sun的ZFS, MacOS X 也会跟着沾光。没听说过Windows
下怎么读UFS．

这不是很明确吗？
我批判的是ROR说开发FreeBSD的“都是”在Mac上完成的。且不说“都是”是显然错误
的，用Mac搞开发和有没有人用FreeBSD完全是两码事。Mac流行是因为*nix的这套工具
，说白了就是userland的ecosystem，做UNIX/BSD/Linux开发很方便而已。然后OS X的
userland本来就是拿的FreeBSD的，用这个来说明FreeBSD不好用没人用，岂不是自己打脸

方便用了
还有因为GPL v3的原因，之前一直卡在老版本的GCC没法升级。FreeBSD 10开始换用
Clang，现在已经没有这个限制了（2014年初）。OpenBSD里GCC还是4.2.1，一直在讨论
是不是要换Clang或者别的
FreeBSD的虚拟化bhyve也是FreeBSD 10才出来的（2014年初）
这些重大更新都是近几年发生的，质量都很高。FreeBSD 8的时候就试过，那时感觉不
是一般难用。到了10，用起来和Linux比没什么不顺手的，而且系统特别整洁非常适合
强迫症，比Ubuntu这些乱糟糟的发行版强多了（当然Arch也是小而整洁）

Darwin/XNU用BSD子系统，引入FreeBSD代码，首先不是“抄”。是用，符合BSD的
License。其次，尽管子系统用的BSD，Darwin本身不是BSD/FreeBSD。
XNU是个混合核心。BSD子系统是核心的一部分。也就是说用户态和核心态的区分和切换
是在BSD核心子系统的上方。我没怎么用过Ubuntu userspace for windows，但我理解
是，这个Ubuntu只是个用户态应用，本身不在Windows的核心里，也不参与Windows的核
心管理和应用。顺便说一句，Windows核心也是混合核心。
一个简单的例子，就是TCP/IP核心栈。OS X的TCP/IP栈是BSD核心子模块提供的。
Ubuntu Userspace for Windows，我不大相信你用的TCP/IP栈在Ubuntu的Userspace上。
另外，用man里的版权来说明一个系统是什么，没有意义。
最后，有Netflix和Whatsapp用FreeBSD，说明FreeBSD不错。但以此说明它比Linux好，

1. installing a new application almost always breaks other installed
applications because of crappy 'pkg' file management tool
2. UFS or ZFS is not as fast as ext3/ext4 file systems used on linux
3. official freebsd forum is full of arrogant ppl, posting a topic usually
get numerous warnings from forum leads about spellings, i.e. FreeBSD instead
of freebsd. |

但是linux的supporting community 比freebsd要大得多，很多feature近些年也是linux
上快过freeBSD. 最近一个时期embedded linux players越来越多，如果我要develope产
品，当然首选linux. 有的时候performance查个一点儿半点儿的不算啥。 |

当年实验室集群linux nfs10太机器都拖不起来。freebsd拖50台机器。
别的用处我基本上持怀疑态度。

本的package，FreeBSD起码得官方去玩了高版本才能支持吧:-)

发帖数: 10550 | 14 系统本身只要是RELEASE版本的都可以binary升级。马上11-RELEASE就要在9月出来，10
.x-RELEASE的无缝升级（类似Ubuntu的LTS版本之间升级）。现在装10.3-RELEASE就行
app用pkg装都是binary，不需要ports编译，当然要编译也可以
如果熟悉Arch的话，FreeBSD的系统和app默认升级（freebsd-update和pkg）相当于
pacman，ports相当于AUR但是ports是官方的。Arch里用makepkg编译AUR的东西成
pacman包安装，相当于FreeBSD里从ports里make install自动出来一个pkg包安装
相当给力 |

好几台服务器，都是用FreeBSD，可惜工作后就玩的少了，主要搞HP-UX了。
注：世界上最大的FTP站点——download.com就是用FreeBSD架设的，同时支持

有次去BluePoint玩，HahaLee给我看了他在FreeBSD下make的
CXwin扩展的BluePoint XFree3.3.6，可以在xterm下显示中文，
这个版本就是BP的双响炮里的那个FreeBSD，但并不带有中文输入
因为他觉得在BSD下没必要输入，可以看就可以了；）
之后的尝试就是我自己玩了，因为我希望可以进行输入；）
因为BSD的Linux兼容可以运行Linux的二进制文件，所有我就把
BP里的输入方法套了进来，方法很简单：
先在BSD里把双响炮随盘的BSD部分的XFREE336 pkg安装上，
然后将1.0版BluePoint Linux的CXWintools和字体的RPM解开，
分目录拷贝到BSD下X的相关目录，运行X之后启动chinput，
如果一切顺利输入条将出现在X的桌面上，你就可以使用输入法了，
虽然这个输入方法不如BP2.0里所带的新工具，但足够你在BSD里
既可以看中文也可以输入中文，而且你拥有BIG5和GB两套系统，
反正我自己是很happy的说，因为不用cxwin了，而且字体也很不错
还可以用中文的KDE |

to format it cs ext2fs using freeBSD (the other OS is Win XP).
However, when I try to use freeBSD fdisk on the hd, it refused
to do the work, complaining about the parameters of hd were not
right. I met this kind of problem on another machine, but used
Linux to fdisk and mkfs. However, this machine is a notebook.
No linux available.
So my questions are:
1. how fdisk this hd using freebsd?
2. I forgot what is the command for making a f |

FreeBSD上
大版本更新最快的是Arch，蹚完了Ubuntu接着蹚。等其它Linux发行版都用完一圈了，
才轮到RHEL。然后CentOS等RHEL出来再去捡点剩饭，况且CentOS已经成了Red Hat的狗
，每次都便秘一样拖到不能再拖才拉出来
FreeBSD在中间等Linux小白鼠蹚过一遍雷之后把稳定的都给收集起来自己用，还同时维
护好几个版本
CentOS不玩高版本的是因为它玩不起呀，毕竟都是Fedora玩一万遍剩下的。你难道不知
道其实Fedora自己是很激进的吗？ |

That's not something important. You see, the OS FreeBSD is an open source
system, programmer in Yahoo can modify the codes to fit ther Site.
FreeBSD is a good OS. But it's not an OS for beginner. It's a the most
UNIX-like one in the *nix searial OS's. If you have not too much experience
in using *nix OS, I suggest you to learn Linux at first. |

I have a simulation program. I wrote it on Linux using gcc.
I worked very well. Since I have only 1GB ram memory, whenever
it needs more memory, it uses swap. I also run this on a server
having 4GB ram. Everything was smooth.
After my system failure (hardware), I decided to install FreeBSD
because the Linux fedora distributions are getting worse, and
RHLE are charging money, and tired of suse....

I used it a year ago. But this time, the same wireless chipset, but
newer driver, it did not work. The website only has instruction for
FreeBSD 6, not 5.x. So I am asking how to do it for 5.x, and I am sure

特別是macports和fink
连KDE和Gnome都可以运行。
不过说实话，用用字符界面的UNIX程序还可以

秒杀绝大多数Linux distro，也就Arch的pacman和AUR可以与之媲美。pkg比pacman厉害
的地方在于支持多版本共存，所以实际上pkg已经秒杀了所有Linux distro |
