No mathematician should ever allow himself to forget that mathematics, more
than any art or science, is a young man's game," the British mathematician G
.H. Hardy wrote in A Mathematician's Apology. But the older guys are now
catching up.
Since Hardy wrote those lines in 1940, it has been conventional wisdom that
mathematical breakthroughs are most often made in a moment of brilliance by

Rumors swept through the mathematics community that a great advance had been
made by a researcher no one seemed to know — someone whose talents had
been so overlooked after he earned his doctorate in 1992 that he had found
it difficult to get an academic job, working for several years as an
accountant and even in a Subway sandwich shop.
“Basically, no one knows him,” said Andrew Granville, a number theorist at
the Université de Montréal. “Now, suddenly, he has proved one of the

This month's column is devoted to an article called A Mathematician's Lament

Tibra Capital addresses shortage of financial mathematicians
25 Aug 2008
Financial services are a rapidly-growing part of the Australian economy and
currently there is a great shortage of financial mathematicians in the
workplace.
Due to the strong undergraduate offerings UOW’s School of Mathematics and
Applied Statistics has in this area, Tibra Capital is keen to attract more
elite students into the degree offerings -- and also offer them work
experience at Tibra.

There was a debate about Gang Tian's mathematical contribution. PKU and NJU

Now let us look at the living mathematicians whom we consider as geometers in
the world. There may be many missions. The top 30 may be considered as first

An astronomer, a physicist and a mathematician (it is said) were
holidaying in Scotland. Glancing from a train window, they
observed a black sheep in the middle of a field.
"How interesting," observed the astronomer, "all scottish sheep

To which the physicist responded, "No, no! Some Scottish
sheep are black!"
The mathematician gazed heavenward in supplication, and then

eluded even the best minds for more than 300 years. Wiles's hard-won success
came after digging into a vast web of mathematical conjectures ... 阅读全帖
