Interview with Dr. Xi Yin

--- By Fiona Rawsontile, Sept 2015
This interview was inspired by an earlier interview of Dr. Yin I saw on the
Internet, which made me think that we can’t expect someone who normally
writes for entertainment to understand a physicist. To “provoke” a
scientist, we need another scientist. So I volunt...

Antiquity
The best known approximations to π dating before the Common Era were
accurate to two decimal places; this was improved upon in Chinese
mathematics in particular by the mid first millennium, to an accuracy of
seven decimal places. After this, no further progress was made until the
late medieval period.
In ancient China, values for π included 3.1547 (around 1 AD), √10 (100 AD,
approximately 3.1623), and

"No, he was truly outstanding: he was head and shoulders above the rest of
the students. He was not only the first, but the gap. I think that he did
computer science (after mathematics) mostly because his father didn’t want
him to stay in pure mat...

Proclus (412–485 AD), a Greek
mathematician who lived around seven centuries after Euclid, wrote in his
commentary on the Elements: "Euclid, who put together the Elements,
collecting many of Eudoxus' theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetus', and
also bringing to irrefragable demonstration the things which were only
somewhat loosely proved by his predecessors".
Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BC) was probably the source for most of books I and

Google AI system proves over 1200 mathematical theorems
A new and remarkable development here is that several researchers at Google
’s research center in Mountain View, California have now developed an AI
theorem-proving program. Their program works with the HOL-Light theorem
prover, which was used in Hales’ proof of the Kepl...
