Think about Euler, the GREATEST mathematician in history. He solved
a lot of application problems. And many of the solutions were developed to a
whole branch of mathematics derived from Euler's ideas.
The most important point in math should be the idea. Theorems are also
important, but be to frank, they are logically implied in the original
ideas.
I think that is the reason why sometimes a physicist even engineer could
contribute more than an ordinary mathematician to math. For example, Newton,

Anyone who claims this don't really understand physics.
Let me give you some examples. Mathematicians are often interested in very
general properties of theories, and global aspects (i.e. topology).
Physicists (by which I mean string theorists :) ) are more interested in the
dynamics. Many things physicists are interested in are uninteresting to
mathematicians. For instance, the cusp anomalous dimension of N=4 SYM, which
is extremely interesting to string theorists, would hardly draw any

Three and five are prime numbers — that is, they are divisible only by 1

Mathematicians have long believed that there are an infinite number of such
