Anyone has some inside information about the recent result
on K2K long baseline neutrino Oscillation Experiment?
I heard some rumer that they have significant lower rate
than expected, is it true? This should be very important
results.
For people at/near Caltech,
there will be a special seminar at 2pm today in 248 Lauritsen.
Makoto Sakuda of KEK, Japan will present the preliminary results
from K2K long baseline neutrino Oscillation Experiment.

美国Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS)
曾经在2007年观测到中微子超光速。当时实验精度较低。
现在MINOS发言人Jenny Thomas宣布MINOS将在更高精度
重复中微子超光速实验。
夸克,电子,μ子,τ子都带电荷。惟有中微子不带电。
有可能打破相对论的唯一候选人就是中微子。
换言之,本狼预言μ子,τ子将和质子,中子,电子一样,
将符合相对论,不可能超光速。

哈哈,言过其实了,引力子也不带电。也可能打破相对论。
不过,引力子到现在还没现身,不能指望它了。

既然有人争论方的学术水平,就上网搜了一下。应该说这个水平对于一个junior
faculty来说可以算是很牛B了,但是对于老方这种senior的已经搞了一辈子的人来说,
就只能算so so。不要说是院士,离aps fellow的级别也还差了不少。引用率最高的一
篇文章还是95年到了arizona之后跟老外合作的,被引118次,这也是方唯一一篇被引用
上百次的文章。可见方励之89之前确实没有做出过什么重要的工作,他的名声和地位绝
对是靠政治得来的,当然其中部分的也是80年在中国搞科普所得,必须承认科普工作也是
有重要的社会意义的。
(BTW,有人说你这个搜索未必完整。不错,确实不能保证100%毫无遗漏。但是我
用的search engine is THE search engine everybody in this community uses today.

What they are comparing are not upgoing and down going neutrinos,
(the upgoing neutrinos are very few), but rather mu neutrinos and
e neutrinos, these should have a ratio of 2:1, but experiment found
the ratio less than that. Also, no one has ever detected tau neutrinos
directly yet.
The trouble is, although solar neutrino,atomspheric neutrino and collider
experiment (LSND, and the future Chicago-Minnesota project)all show

很多实验啊
有继续测oscillation的角度之类的(neutrino mass matrix),
有测neutrino/anti-neutrino分别oscillation是否一致的(以检测CPT的)
有测是否有neutrinoless doublebeta decay的(lepton number violation)
。。。。。
甚至还有对撞机上找heavy pseudoDirac neutrino或者lepton number violation的
(当然这个有点牵强)
做理论模型的主要在flavor physics部分
一方面看neutrino的flavor和别的能不能扯上点,主要在gut之类的理论中
一方面看neutrino自己的flavor,有没有什么能indicate中微子理论模型的
还有不少和cosmology扯一块的,比如做些leptogenesis之类
当然还有做乱七八糟neutrino新模型的
不过这些估计得等我们理解了electron质量从哪里来的再说
呵呵

Where did you get your degree? There are many ways to do the experiment.
Just give you one idea:
Neutrino has energy, when it slows down, it loses energy through Cerenkov
radiation. You can do measurement on neutrino by counting photons. Most
modern neutrino experiments do in this way.

下到这本书的电子版无数天了,每次读都被书最开始的option price,
Black-Scholes model这些我根本不知所云的概念吓住,没继续下去,
直到近日,版上有人重新提到这本书,终于捏着鼻子把序言部分读完,
看到第一章他怎么学物理的,里面提及一些物理学史的部分,错误无数:
1.这厮是南非人,在开普敦读的本科,1966年到哥大读PHD
2.他的PHD读了7年,正如本版已经有人指出的,他的解释是他在
开普敦没有受到很好的教育,在哥大必须要上3还是4年的课.
3.第一章23页,当提及Fermi的时候,他说"Amazingly,he was also
the theorist who, in the 1930s, had predicted the existence
of the neutrino"--neutrino是Pauli最先预言的吧,名字是Fermi起的.
4.第一章24页,"Willis Lamb and Polykarp Kush,both at Columbia in

The current model (also a widely accepted one) requires
neutrino mass = 0. However, many are still thinking of
the possibility of none 0 mass.
There are a few hints from experiment, that may suggests
neutrino mass. One is from solar neutrino, one get quite
different results from what we expect. The expectation
is coming from 1.particle model + 2.sun model. If we are

One of the best hopes to verify or disprove the findings comes from Fermilab
's MINOS experiment, which also sends neutrinos flying underground over a
similar distance to end up at the Soudan mine in Minnesota. In 2007, MINOS
researchers found a trend in their data that suggested neutrinos might be
arriving early, as they do in the new CERN data. However, the experiment at
the time did not have enough precision to rule out the possibility that the
results were a statistical fluke.

个人认为,刚开始只要一个腰带,act, 和locking biner就可以了。头几次最好和有经
验的人一起,他们一般都有全套的biner, pro, 等。先蹭他们的。自己只需要prussik
,a few slings, 和Personal Anchor System(可用sling,推荐Metolius Personal
Anchor System http://www.metoliusclimbing.com/pas.htm
等出去了几次,自己对需要什么,喜欢什么就会有更多认识,再买不迟。
对于unlocking biner或quickdraw,推荐wild country helium。超轻,和bd的
Neutrino差不多,感觉比Neutrino好。但也有人complain太轻了,手感不好。
另外,一般来说wired biner比solid的轻和牢。

Neutrino is good for racking Cams, especially C4 since the color coding
matches :) I have a bunch of Neutrinos that I use for spare non-locking
biners.
All my alpine draws use BD Oz, Camp Nano, and Mammut Moses. They are all
good. Camp Nano is a bit small though.
Rocklock is perfect for the main locker for its lightness, reasonably big
size, and roundness (I use reverso 3 with rock lock, so roundness is
important). mini is good for building anchors because it's big enough for
clove/munter hitche

If you replace photon with graviton, that is ok, because graviton doesn't
have a mass either. But you simply can not replace photon with neutrino,
because neutrino indeed has a mass, although very small.
