I am having some similar problems esp. when it comes to writing the
dissertation. THe more I hate it, the slower I am working on it and the slower
it becomes. So I'd be stuck in an evil circle.
Make small goals, even just a one-hour goal, ask yourself to finish reading
one chapter or finishing writing one page within this one hour and then hung
in there.
NEVER be too hard on yourself especially when you are now having some problem.

2. use java -server option
3. use Java7 or later
Normally Java is faster than most C++ code without smart pointer and memory
pool.
But if your C++ code is in fact C functions, Java should be slower by 1.4
times or more, depending on how you implement the Java code.
cygwin has a native Java compiler, but the native code it generates could be
slower if you use a lot of objects. |

interpolation. the other example is the execution speed -- while perl is
not super fast, python is even slower. (you don't have to take out your old
example; i still remember it. i am not claiming python is always slower than
perl, but in most cases it is.)
of course, things like string interpolation and built-in regex are all
synatx sugars; but perl is full of syntax sugars which makes it unique. |

Imagine
a library you use has all asserts, no error code. In your case,
assert is a exception you never catch, meaning you can't use that exception
