Managing Actuary
The Actuarial Department at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC
) is looking for motivated actuaries interested in transforming the
healthcare delivery system to join our talented team on our Durham, North
Carolina campus. Actuaries desiring the opportunity to collaborate with
providers, health systems and other industry stakeholders to ensure better
quality and more affordable care for our members will be a great fit for
this role. This role will be highly visible across the company and will be
responsible for leading a team of three actuarial professionals to support
the company mission and vision to serve North Carolinian’s health care
needs.
• Provides strategic direction as Actuarial Services management point
of contact for Healthcare Division, including Network Management &
Transformation, Corporate Pharmacy, Care Management Operations, and Medical
Economics
• Actively contributes to the overall management and success of the
Actuarial, Analytics, and Underwriting Division as a member of the Actuarial
Services management team.
• Responsible for the delivery of actuarial projects from start to
finish, including managing quality and timeliness.
• Manages the preparation and interpretation of actuarial information,
studies, and modeling to management, including communication and
recommendations.
• Makes presentations and or presents findings and recommendations to
key constituents, including senior management.
• Provide expert guidance to support the creation of systems
specifications, contracts, , and other actuarial aspects of product
development.
• Monitors and analyzes developments in actuarial techniques, laws and
regulations applicable to company operations and communicates implications
and recommendations to impacted areas.
• Represents the company on industry and professional committees and/
or with regulators.
• Responsible for communicating with and managing the actuarial
relationship with the NCDOI, CMS, and external auditors.
• Manages/supports Financial Planning and Forecasting.
• Responsible for enterprise actuarial functions including, but not
limited to:
o Medical and Pharmacy Trend analysis
o Experience Studies
o Provider network design and analysis
o Value-based provider contract evaluations
o Accountable Care Organization (ACO) development and implementation
o Impact of internal and vendor led medical expense programs
o Product innovation and pricing
• Responsible for Actuarial support to the following divisions:
o Healthcare Services
o Sales, Marketing, and Communication
o Finance
o Legal, Compliance, and Government Affairs
o Diversified Markets and Strategy
• Supervise staff with authority to hire and fire, Provides guidance,
feedback, development and direction to staff. Develops and manages a high
performing team.
• Manages their staff members, who are participants in the Actuarial
Development Program (ADP), to ensure they meet the ADP goals.
• Responsible for maintaining continuing education requirements as set
by the appropriate Actuarial governing body (i.e. Society of Actuaries)
Hiring Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree
• Eight years of relevant actuarial experience
• Two years leadership experience
• FSA, MAAA
Hiring Preferences
• Ten years of relevant actuarial experience, including provider
network and medical expense program evaluations and value based contracting
or Accountable Care Organization (ACO) development
• Strong leadership skills, including the ability to successfully
manage a high performing team
• Strong analytical skills
• Strong verbal, written and presentation skills, including the
ability to work well with all levels of management in the company
• People skills and the ability to be resourceful, as well as to make

• Organizational skills, which allow the ability to function in an

Staff Actuary
The Actuarial Department at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC

• Serves as senior level Actuarial Services point of contact for

Hiring Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree
• Seven years of actuarial experience is required.
• FSA, MAAA
• Note: a candidate with ASA and MAAA with at least 9 years of
relevant actuarial experience may also be considered.
Hiring Preferences
• Experience leading projects or teams, and with provider network and
medical expense program evaluations and value based contracting or
Accountable Care Organization (ACO) development
• Strong analytical skills
• Strong people skills and the ability to be resourceful, as well as
to make concise, independent and defensible decisions

Actuarial Analyst
The Actuarial & Underwriting Department at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North
Carolina (BCBSNC) is looking for motivated actuaries to join our talented
team on our Durham, North Carolina campus. Individuals who have shown a
commitment to obtaining professional designations as an actuary and are
looking to grow their careers in a dynamic work environment and changing

• Analyzes financial, statistical and mathematical data and performs
actuarial calculations.
• May assist in the determination of pricing, reserves and/or cash
flow projections.

Hiring Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree
• Has completed one actuarial exam or is on track to do so.
The incumbent is in the actuarial student program and is committed to
completing the Society of Actuaries education system courses necessary to
attain the ASA designation.
Hiring Preferences
• A degree in actuarial science, mathematics, economics, accounting or
other relevant field is preferred.
• One year work experience.
• Good analytical and decision-making skills
• Good communication skills
• Exposure to Microsoft Excel and Word, Visual Basic, exposure to data
retrieval software
• Strong desire to attain their FSA
