I have a dilemma and would like to hear from you.
I know a professor in a hospital of a top US university personally. He was
the ex-department chair, a PI has about 7 postdoc in the lab. He offered
me an assistant professorship in his lab. I will be paid from his grant (
around 65k). No money as start-up fund. He agreed that it is actually a
sort of senior postdoc. However, he mentioned that there are very few people
are tenured in the hospital. Even he himself, he said, will be paid from
his own grant starting from next year
Another offer I have is a senior scientist position in a Hong Kong. Pay is
25% higher.
Both positions are not independent.
My field is cancer genomics. Publication: 1 Nature Medicine + 5 other first
-authored papers + 4 co-authored papers.
I’m currently in HK, with 2 children and a working wife. I’m not sure if
I should go to US and take this so called “assistant professor”. Does
that job have future? I’m averagely-intelligent. Do mind working hard
though…
Kindly let me know if what you will do if you were me.
Thank you. |

Your offered position is not attractive. Why not to get a tenure-track
position in HKU? |
a**********y 发帖数: 2367 | 5 I've heard top 1/2 medical schools recruiting this kind of APs. And most of
them are paid from their own/senior person's grants. and most of them have
no problems securing lots of money because they are very Niu. Even after
tenure, they would have to pay themselves.
I think it would be a good experience if you are paid a little better. Even
if you don't get your tenure there you can come out and get a good position
elsewhere. |

Yeah I do agree that it is not a real AP. He emphasized a lot that there is
very few tenured professors in this Hospital. But I guess having start-up
fund or not make a huge difference...
I'm trying to get a real AP, but no luck yet. Sometime I'm confused too.
Although my CV is not sparking, I do see person with similar CV got real AP
position.
Also this Professor I knew mentioned that there was a staff of him at the
rank of associate professor (maybe research associate professor?) got a good
position in China and returned home. Maybe I should do the same thing. The
major reluctance is the kids. My 10-years-old do not want to go back to
china.
I have the similar thought as "applyfacualty". Maybe doing a senior postdoc
in US top school and in HK do make a difference? |

What the professor offered is just a research assistant professor, if not a
tenure track, could be terminated anytime.
He is honest and the the position just depends on himself, funding, emotion
and other issues |
